1976 pinto rear disc problem
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:17:16 PM »
recently installed rear disc brake on my pro street pinto. disc brake setup consists of 1982 chevy calipers and after market mounting brackets. problem I am having is that I can't get a good firm brake pedal. if you pump the brake pedal you get a firm pedal otherwise the pedal will go to the floor.when I had the drum brakes on the car I always had a good firm pedal. by the way this is not a power brake setup. any suggestions. have changed the brake master cylinder and bled the entire brake system and still have the same results. front brakes is the same setup 1982 chevy calipers and 9 inch rotors.

I bet because of the disk brakes, the pistons in them are bigger than a wheel cylinder, so means it needs more fluid movement, so you may need a bigger bore master, or you still have air in the lines

found some information on cme web site last night I have decided to install a brake master cylinder for a 1979 corvette which came with four wheel disc brakes. found out that this type master cylinder has different type valves inside than a disc/drum brake master cylinder. going to change master cylinder Saturday will let you know how it works out.

and don't forget to bench bleed the master cylinder before putting it on the car. that is a big known issue with your symptoms.
