1974 Ford Pinto 2.3 Spark Plugs
« on: January 02, 2017, 08:41:44 AM »
Changing out the spark plugs now for my pinto. For best performance, what should I gap the spark plugs at? Also, someone told me the firing sequence is 1-3-4-2, is that correct?

All depends on if you have a point type dist or a later dura spark. Point dist will be a closer gap of aprox .025 with .035 for the dura spark dist. Fireing order is cast on the top of the intake manifold. (I think). Gap will not make a big difference on the dura spark unless its gaped at 1/8" or zero. The dura spark system will jump a wide gap where a point dist will miss if the gap is too wide. Always start on the low side as the gap will get larger with miles on the car/engine. Best thing you could do is convert over to a dura spark if you have points.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

I have a point type distributor and from what I can gather from the web, the default is .034.

That would be right for a stock point system..

Changed the spark plugs out and my Pinto runs amazing! Gap was correct and no misfire. Just got to start working on the carburetor now.
