1973 Pinto Station Wagon Oil Pan Rattling Noise?
« on: February 14, 2016, 09:18:43 AM »
Hello all! It's great to have found this forum!

I resently acquire a 1973 Pinto Wagon with only 42,000 original miles and after sitting out back in this farmers field since 1999 I was able to get it back up and running. It took a bit of work( dropped fuel tank rebuilt the carb ...) it runs great but when I first start it in the morning cold it has a strange noise underneath coming from the oilpan. It sounds like something bouncing around in there. There is no rythim to it and it's a hollow sound like something litterly bouncing around off the bottom of the oil pan. After it warms up it seems to go away.
I'm thinking I am going to need to drop the oil pan and check to see to it the oil pickup is not loose or see wether I have a bad bearing. Can this be done without pulling the motor? Any help would be great! Thanks

Oh btw. It has the 2000cc with automatic 3 speed

Looking for strange noises can be fun , one , what else have you changed since you got the car , could be some bearings in to water pump or alternator could be dry , fan belts can do the same thing , a/c clutch if you have it can do it too, try removing all the belt and try again , but only for a minute when cold to see if the noise goes away , if you have a automatic check the toque converter nuts and transmission lines to see if the are hitting anything , next could be the engine mounts are mushed out and touching somthing when cold , since you have the fan belts off change the timing belt , at that mileage it is going to snap , happy hunting

I was able to pull the pan today and who would have thought it would be such s pain in the @$$! But after some gentle persuasion and a few touching quotes I did it! I had to jack the engine up a bit and get my hand in there to unbolt the oil pickup tube.
Did not find anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes I think I might just worry to much....
I did replace the timing belt while I was at it because I was thinking the same thing
Now I just need to figure out how to get my fuel gauge to work again. After I dropped the tank and flushed it out it now only goes to an 1/8 of a tank when full. But it does move up to that point so I think I can repair it.
I'd like to just replace the sending unit and full gauge all together but after two days of pecking at the PC I have been unsuccessful in finding a replacement

A cracked flexplate can make really weird noises that sound like they are coming from the engine. They can also disappear once warm.....
