I have found a 1973 Ford Pinto squire wagon for sale in the same location as me. The seller is asking $3200 and is firm on the price. He says that he has replaced a long list of parts under the hood. I just got back from taking a look at the car. The body is straight and the interior clean. I am wondering if this is a fair price....or if I should tery to talk him down.....or maybe offer payments....or what?

I am, by far, the last one that needs to give advice to anyone about cars, however when you are talking antique, classic and collectible cars the first thing you must keep in mind, AM I WILLING TO PAY THE SELLERS PRICE....... if the seller has FIRM on it, my experience in the past when it has FIRM, the seller is probably not going to take offers. the second thing you must keep in mind, DO I WANT THE CAR FOR THAT PRICE.....you have to make up your mind if the car is what the seller is asking, when dealing in these cars there really is no kelly blue book for them.......... .a buddy at work just bought a 1940 ford truck powered by 350/350 turbo tranny and payed 32,500 for it, the seller probably only had 25000 in it parts wise.......... .my daughter in law asked WAS IT WORTH THAT? I told her when dealing with them its a IS IT WHAT I WANT AND AM I WILLING TO PAY THAT PRICE GAME........I havent even started on my 80 wagon and I am already at $1200 with purchse price of 700 and thats just clutch kit, starter, headlight bezel, and hood latch cable (I did all the work myself).....I just got estimates on headliner, door panel and front and rear seats from two shops that anywhere from $1800-$2300...........paint, carpet and dash pad(me doing the work) another $300 or so ......if he has reciept for all the parts, kind of add them up and see what they total up to, then ask yourself IS THIS CAR WHAT I WANT FOR THIS PRICE......... and I want to ask a personal question if you dont mind....why would you want to make payments to the seller?..........prob ably going to want more for the car if you do that.

If the body is clean & doesn't need paint, the interior isn't going to need work & the car drives & stops well the price is fair.
Paint will set you back a grand or more if the paint is shot so you're ahead there if it's nice. Keep in mind that suspension parts may be worn & brakes could be shot so there might still be expenses to get it ready for daily use so make sure you can afford repairs down the road.

Also, if the head has never been reworked (at least hardened exhaust seats installed), that can quickly add up to an additional $400 or so in machine work alone. Plus additional parts (gaskets, etc), and labor costs if it's not something you can do yourself.
I'll assume it has a 2.0 in it? If it does, a lot of parts must be sourced from the UK, as far as internal engine stuff goes. What parts does he say have been replaced? Stuff like distributor, carb, water pump, etc are still available from most parts suppliers. It's the internals I'd be most curious about.

If the Craigslist car is the one in question you can be pretty certain the reason some of the dash lights don't work is because the housing has dryed out and is crumbling.

If that's the car it's at max price even for an Ohio guy like myself. Finding a car that isn't rusted junk costs extra here. It looks like it COULD be a really nice car with about a grand put in the right places & loads of elbow grease but 4K can buy a better car if you're patient.
Unless that car is some childhood dream car I'd keep my cash & stay on the hunt.
