Title: 1972 Runabout
Post by: brirobyg on December 15, 2011, 10:07:37 PM
Hi,
A 1972 Runabout just made it's new home in my garage. It's a one owner car and I wondered about a few things on it. It has an  air conditioning system that was dealer installed after the car was purchased and was an ad-on underneath the dash from door to door with it's own registers and two control knobs, and it has a small Ford emblem on it way over on the passenger side. The compressor is mounted on the left side of the engine which I believe is opposite the factory installation. Anyone seen this setup?
It has a vinyl top that was factory installed that has a paisley print in the vinyl, very 70's. Was that in fact a factory option?
The side door moldings that extend to the front fenders and rear quarters have what appears to be a pin or fastener of some sort on each end of each piece that are in the center black part of the molding and the reason they caught my attention is that they are not black and are easily noticed especially on the smaller fender and quarter pieces. I saw a picture of another 72  that appeared to have the same thing, just wondering if they are also factory pieces or put on afterwards.
It has a tinted windshield and rear window, the sides appear to be clear. The interior has wood trim inserts along the dash and small rectangular insets on each door panel with small armrests. The person I bought the car from was the original owner and all of these features I was told are original and not changed at any time.
I've owned a number of Pintos 35 years ago, I just can't remember all the details.
Anyone knowing about the options, love to hear about it. I thought of changing the car around (V8 swap) but it's pretty cool the way it is.  I had a V8 71 back in the days and it only lasted a short time, maybe not long enough to get it out of my system, just part of my extended mid-life crisis.
     Thanks

Congratulation s on your new Pinto! OMG!!! I'm so jealous right now!!! A paisley vinyl-top!?! That is too cool!

It sounds like your car has the deluxe interior- the faux wood panels on the dashboard and door panels. You have a long horn pad with the Ford shield as opposed to the round horn button with the kicking foal I take it? I am thinking the bodyside molding was installed after purchase- either by the dealer or someone else. There shouldn't be brads or other fastener seen on the outside of the molding. My '71 sedan has after-market bodyside molding but it's the adhesive type and WAY too long to be factory! lol However, my car also has the deluxe interior. Alas, no kicking foal embossed on the door panel.

Please please PLEASE show lots of pictures! Interior AND exterior! I'm guessing the top was a special order. They usually came in white, black, orange, green, and possibly dark brown back then.  OOoooh I wanna see your car!!!  ;D

P.S. My first Pinto was a '72. Same model year as me.  ;)
