1971 upper & lower control arms. Left vs right
« on: December 21, 2016, 10:40:38 PM »
Hi guys and gals
As carefull as I've been taking it apart I let too much time pass getting it back together,I did mark passenger and driver side but am now doubting in my memory now that new ball joints and bushings are installed and all is freshly bead blasted and painted.is there a difference in the arms as far as left and right goes.

Thanks
  Tony

I do not see any difference in the control arms from left to right.  The pressed in bolts in the control arm end of the strut rods will need to be installed in a different direction for each side.  Sounds like fun assembling freshly cleaned parts.

Perfect time to add sway bar as 71 had none.  I installed a 75 one 5/8 Dia I believe on mine.

I'm leaning more towards a serious stree strip car so I thought I'd leave the sway bar out of the equation

Ok you got me,why are the bolts supposed to be installed in a different direction from one side to the other ? Lol the pair I took off my parts car the bolts are pressed in in the same direction.

Thanks

The strut rod bolts to the top of the lower control arm.  If the bolts were installed in the same direction in the strut rod, one strut rod would be aimed correctly and the other side would be aimed out the side of the car or towards the front.  Hard to verbally explain, try laying both of them out on the floor to see proper orientation.

Suspect we are getting our word descriptions mixed up.  The bolts enter both lower control arms from the top.  The strut rods have to be filliped over from one side to the other in order to lay on the top of the lower control arm and be aimed in the right direction.

Since you have two strut rods with the bolts pressed in in the same direction, you may have strut rods from more than one car (looking at two right or two left assemblies?).  Hope I got all that right, have fun.

oldkayaker - I think Tony is talking about the upper control arm.

Although I stamped mine L / R - I will check a couple measurements today - they are not together right now (new bushings not installed).
I do not remember seeing any part numbers on the uppers......

Which reminds me..... I need a new pair of strut arms ! Anyone see them come up for sale ? 1972

Lol. Yep word description. Orientation of them was a no brainer just thought you were saying bolts in from bottom on one side and from the top on the other side. It's all good  thanks for your help

Yep I'm that smart,I even have a stamp set but marked with a sharpie and told myself just keep in mind which side they go on while cleaning and painting. Pretty sure I did but self doubt always finds a way to play mind games.

Also guys I'm just assuming that where it mounts to the body with the bushing and large nut that it just gets tightened to where the nut stops at the end of the thread  if memory serves me that how some of the other older fords were.

Measured up my upper control arms & could find no difference.
Only thing I could see a person can make a mistake is the rod (through bushings) has a bend in the middle. That bend is for clearance for the shock mount, ( has to be towards the frame.

My strut arms are badly rusted where the rubber bushing goes.

I just put mine on with the impact. Couldn't find a torque for that nut. Washer keeps it from going on too far anyway.

I think your talking about the upper control arm shaft. Lol.
Some of the dumbest things a guy can't find sometimes when ensembles start, something as stupid as the bolt that holds the front hub on,dammed if I can find it maybe even threw it out thinking a new one should show up with the strange brake kit but nope,it's just gone. Lol. It looks like Strange sent me the wrong caliber mounting plate or their plate simply doesn't fit. Of course they are shut down till New Years. Hahaha. I think it's beer o'clock.

According to the 71 and 72 Ford manuals, the torque on the "strut to side rail" nut is 60-80 lb.-ft.

By "the bolt that holds the front hub on" are you referring to the nut and washer by wheel bearing that holds the hub on the spindle?  If so, Rock Auto has those for ~$3 plus shipping.  Or are you referring to caliper to spindle bolts, or control arm to body bolts, or?

No one is open till the new year so i have to wait on answers. I have a feeling they sent the wrong caliper mounting plate. I have not yet desided what route im going with the roll bar and that needs to be done Before i spray in the bed liner and the headliner goes in after all that.
