1971 carb cross-reference
« on: October 29, 2011, 09:39:49 AM »
Hi everyone. I am new to the exciting world of Pinto ownership. I "stole" my 1971 2L for $500 and it is in great condition, just a few issues; but don't we all at 40 !!
I have had a multitude of "friends" giving me advice on varies issues and as you can guess many are conflicting.
At the moment, my biggest issue is getting the car to run right; the carburetor in particular.  The car came from northern Indiana/southern Michigan where it had been stored for the last 15 years and now is settling at home in north Mississippi. It has 32000 miles, an has automatic transmission, no A/C., all parts are original.
Now the carburetor. It is an Autolite with a tag stamped "D12F  AA" I know it is a 2-barrel. The car with run cold great, just idles high. After it warms, it will run great until you have to brake and stop. It will want to go dead, so I have been shifting into Neutral and keeping revs up. The same occurs when slowing to turn, it wants to die, so I do the same, shift into Neutral, turn corner than back to Drive and go on. I have also noticed when going along that if I ease of the gas, it will seem to want to "surge". After parking and turning engine off, there is a distinct odor of fuel and even some "run-on" with the engine, splutter etc. for a second or two.
I have the opportunity to get a reman. carb but it is not an Autolite. It is a Webber DGV 2-barrel.  Is this compatible ?  Or do I even need a new carb ?
   Any input with be valued.
   Love my car!!!

have you checked the timming? and as far as the carb if it looks to have everything the old one does i don't see any reason why it would not work. i don't have a autolite on mine i have a holley 5200 2-barrel on mine.               just my opinion!

Sounds like it is gumed up from sitting. A good cleaning may work for you.
However, when you take it apart you will likely damage gaskets. Get a kit ?

Since the Pinto was in storage for 15 years the fuel in the tank has more than likely turned to something like varnish. I would suggest you siphon out as much of the gas as possible & install new fuel, yes I know gas is expensive these days, but if fuel stabilizer was not added when 'parked' what you have in the tank & entire fuel system is just plain garbage.
And as the previous poster said, invest in a carb kit- & take it apart & clean it inside.
Still living the dream...In a points & condenser world.

Whenever my old Pinto tries to diesel, or run on when you shut the engine off, it was usually because it was running really hot. One thing you can do whenever it tries to diesel like that, push the gas pedal all the way down. Cold air comes in and kills it right away :)
