1600 engine, no oil pressure
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:27:07 PM »
I have a 1600 ford out of a 1973 pinto that has been rebuilt and has a new oil pump. I can't get any oil pressure, I have checked all oil passages and all are clear, I can't find any problems and it will not pump/pick up oil. Has anyone had this problem?

is the engine in the car or out .. if you are trying to get oil pressure by cranking it over that can be tuff sometimes .. you may have to pull the dizzy and come up with some kind of tool to spin the oil pump and prime the engine ...i`m not real familiar with the 1600 engines ..

Thank you for your reply. The engine is in a piece of equipment and it will start but will not build pressure. I have used 3 gauges and 3 oil pumps, 2 used and 1 new that I had to buy from England. I have built many engines in my time and have never had this problem. ! am at a loss about what to do

I am an aircraft  mechanic and have seen this happen. I would prime the pump with oil. Pour some in the pump inlet
and spin the drive spindle to be sure the gear or rotor inside is well oiled. If your brave you can install the pick up tube and place it in some oil and spin the drive spindle with a variable speed drill slowly and make sure it is pumping, just be sure you don't spin too fast or it will shoot out the outlet all over the place.
Give that a shot and it should be pumping then.

you can check any pump without it even being mounted to an engine ..  as NMPinto said pour some oil into the pick up screen of the pump dip the  screen into a pan of oil ..then with some mechanical means spin the pump over and see if it sucks  ;) ..litterally ... ha ...as well as unhook the oil pressure gage line and see if anything comes out when it`s running ...as i say i dont know everything about the 1600 engine ... does it have hydrolic lifters ,, do they rattle when it runs ?
