Title: #1 spark plug not firing
Post by: wx7pinto on June 22, 2013, 05:33:59 PM
I have a 79 wagon, the #1 spark plug is not firing, I have replaced all the plugs, wires, the distributor cap and rotor, voltage regulator, the ignition module (it melted) and tried switching wires but the #1 plug still does not fire. Since the module melted I figure there must be something causing that and maybe is why #1 is not working. I am not running it any more until I get some idea on what to do, don't want to melt another module. Any ideas?

Have you swapped in another plug? I've had brand new plugs that were junk several times.

I've chased similar issues before, replacing just about every ignition system component on a Sunfire to eliminate a dead cylinder that would come and go. Out of desperation, came full circle and installed another set of plugs...fixed. Definitely agree with the above suggestions... like anything else humans make, sometimes you get one that's bad out of the box, and it's not necessarily visually obvious.

Good luck! Another thought, have you verified that the plug itself is not getting spark, by grounding the plug (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUOmsGiirTU) while it's removed from the cylinder? Be careful if you do this, Dura-spark bites harder than a points ignition. Ask me how I know. :)
