Anyone have any great ideas how to keep the hump from bending and cutting through the driveshaft or bellying out the car?

a roll cage can help a little but most places wont let you run a cage that bolts to the floor or with kickers , becouse its to much reinforcment.

any demo ive ever been too will not allow a roll cage of any kind in any type/model car. because it is as described a reinforcement. the best demo car as we seem to be in the small car area. i ran 2 of these but it has since been banned here . is a volkswagen beetle the old ones. won the thing once took 2nd the other time. but nagging back woes and 3 kids tell me not to do it anymore.

we are allowed to run cages in cars just not welded to the frames.
now if its like a roll cage for a race car it will help (like with roof bars) when and if the back end drops the roof (will drop also)it will tighten up to the bars and stop. bending there as soon as the cage stops as far as there back im not to sure

tunnel tanks build a gas tank to run down you tunnel with angle iron on both sides or your tank bolt the tank in 4 or5 spots down the tunnel if it bends in between your bolts one night move you tank be for the next derby and place your bolts where it wont let that portion move any more

compress the leafs and chain the rear end

Chaining down the rears and compressing the leafs will usually make it worse or bend faster on the hump. But I do like the gas tank idea.

3/8 chain around rear end and arou8nd fraame flatten leafes and give hell. matt 89r

how does this make it worse? every leafed car i have ever seen run does it and it saves the humps big time. please explain.

Hey this is Denny,
Come to help you on the hump thing.I have been building my Pinto wagon derby cars the same way for about six years now.I am a consistent winner.
First off bolting a gas tank to an area of the car that bends is kinda silly.You are asking a container with gas in it to re-inforce your car?
Most places around here make it mandatory to run a door bar behind the seat.(from post to post)I run a 2-1/2 " door bar across,then from that I weld in a piece of steel from the door bar to the floor.On the floor I always weld a piece of flat stock down first.@3" X 6".To this day no official has questioned this because it is part of the door bar system.
There is a couple things to know about where to place your dash bar also,and the one other thing that it can do for you.This is one of my secrets.
Also in the rear area of the car there is a spot where you can weld in a piece of metal about the size of a fifty-cent piece that adds incredible strength.No one has ever found this.Even after being told to look for it.
My best advice-when you get done wrecking your next Pinto,don't haul it off right away.Sit down and have a couple of beers with it.(Before you start drinking the beer jack the car up so it is safe)Then crawl under it,over it ,and look all around it.Pay close attention to where the car bent and tore open.Then look at a fresh car and decide what you could do different next time you build one.This was advice I received when I was eighteen,I am now forty.I still demo,and I still do this.I believe that this has taught me the most over the years.
When in doubt,hit 'em head on as hard as you can!

same here i have a full note book of little things like that for just about every thing but instead of jacking up the car i use the tractor and flip it over
