Title: Iffy about a deal with Karina
Post by: dave1987 on May 19, 2010, 01:44:33 AM
I made a deal with Karina (A.K.A. Marco) for a flywheel he pulled and had resurfaced for me. This was back at the beginning of February. I paid him in advance so he could pay the shop to resurface the flywheel and for the shipping.

He pulled the flywheel and sent it to the shop to have it resurfaced, but when I PM'd him asking what was taking so long, he said he went to shop to pick it up but they lost it. So he pulled another one for me, resurfaced it, and he has said he has it boxed up and ready to ship, but he doesn't have the cash to do so, and he would send it out the following week. That was on April 30th, over two weeks ago. The original deal was over four months ago!

I would be weary of purchasing anything from him and sending payment BEFORE shipment with a tracking number.

Yeah, it's the guy out of Denver. I understand times are tough, I'm going through a rough time myself, but this was FOUR months ago when I sent him payment and it was supposed to be shipped.

Could be awhile, I don't have any cash available anymore to buy another one. Wish he would respond to my PMs. If I get another one I'm just going to get a NEW unit from OEMReplacement, maybe buy one or two from you next year when taxes come in to have a couple spares. Since it's a daily driver and Tia will learn how to drive on it, might be rebuilding the clutch on a regular basis! ;)

I just got off the phone with him, got his number from his website. He verified my shipping address and said he is going to take it to the post office right now. He is only a couple of states away from me, it shouldn't take to long to get here.

Well, the flywheel arrived yesterday. For as long as I waited, I expected a higher quality flywheel than the one that was sent, but it was resurfaced and in decent usable shape.

about 3-4 inches of teeth are broken on the ring gear, about 1 - 1.5" of those teeth in the middle are badly broken, not sure if it's going to be usable without buying a new ring gear and having a shop weld it on, even that is going to run me around $95 with tax, and I paid $72-ish shipped four and a half months ago!

I think I should have just bought a Valor flywheel brand new from the start which would have avoided all of these problems altogether. :(

In the end I am glad Marco pulled through with this deal, just not happy about how it was all processed and the amount of time it took to finalize the deal.

Here are some pictures of the damage, don't mind the ugly chair lol.

Ring gears are not welded on, you put the flywheel in the freezer for the night pre heated the ring gear with a torch,, place it on top of the flywheel and heat the ring gear again with the  torch in circles until it falls on

Would it be possible to remove the ring gear in a similar way, then turn it over so the starter gear engages with the better teeth?

Sounds easy to do, and I'd be happy to do it myself.

you could try it put the fly wheel in the freezer and cool it,, then heat the ring gear with a torch and pry it up from between the two surfaces and work a little at a time all the way around the gear cause if you dont it may crack ,and keep it heated too

No biggie, it'll be early next year before I rebuild the clutch and install this flywheel, I have time to purchase a new ring gear between now and then.

if you plan on using that ring gear put the damaged teeth at the end of the start rotation so when you start it it will run through all the good teeth first and the bad teeth at the end then when you shut it off it will be in the clean spot

Need it for the 2.3 in the 78 Sedan. My dad lives in Gresham Oregon, just outside of Portland. He drives up to Seattle occasionally to see his mother (my Grandmother), I'll see if maybe he would like to meed up with you to pick it up. Then when he drives back to Boise Idaho he can bring it with him! :)
