New to pintos My project
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:25:38 PM »
I purchased a pinto last month looking to build a decent streetable race car.  Being fairly knowledgable about cars this car seems too have it all Rack and Pinion decent handling and a low weight so heres my plan:
stroke the 2.3
M90 Eaton supercharger
Boost the hell out of it and go stomp some v-8s
switch the trans to a C-4
Narrowed ford 9" Rear
headed in the direction of a modified chevy TBI setup With a megasquirt EMS doing double duty on spark and fuel Management. multi port would be better but thats a lot more tuning
I know everyone says Turbo, Turbo, Turbo Im kind of old school in that I want Boost all the time and not just when the Turbo makes it.  To me this sounds like a good combo any engine with 20psi boost makes a lot of power and having it there all the time will give it the low end that this engine seems too lack.
Any thoughts?
Am i way off base?
putting a turbo after the SC is not entirely out of the question but don't know that its required as this Supercharger coming off of a 3.8L should provide plenty of Air
Peace out and thanks for being a fair place to shoot ideas at without the B.S. at the turboford forum

Wasn't referring to "turbo BS"  More of the "your an idiot...Do this...Go look somewhere else..."  Ive read through many of their forums and am not impressed with their etiquette or want or need to help those less mechanically inclined. Dont get me wrong Turbo ford has mass amounts of information they just seem to get into pissing contests

One of the best things about this place is that is cool what you want to do as long as you are doing it with a pinto [or bobCat or even a mustangII]

I too looked at an eaton blower and it can be done by placing it over on the passenger side  using a bottom outlet and routing it through an intercooler into what ever carbaration you want to use.  I would reccomend that you look into a jaguar setup.  Harder to find but the overall length is shorter.  When i was looking at it i decided to shorted the blower by having nothing on the back end of the blower but air intake and use some type of blow threw induction.  On my N/A Pinto I will be using a modified GM TB which will work fine for me but for what you are wanting I would reccomend that you go look at peofession products latest throttle body which is alread set up for blow thru and very compact and you won't need  all the extra stufrf.  just a thought.

When you are ready to go start a project thread with plenty of pictures so we all can learn.

I do have one "road block"  Does anyone know if the new serpentine setups are direct bolt on to an older engine.  I haven't got that far into the 2.3 to find out but from what I've read they are exactly the same except maybe some crank snout differences than im not sure of...  Is this an internal or externally balanced engine?  As soon as I gather all the parts I will start posting pictures... The induction I was considering was removing the throttle plates out of a 2bbl TBI setup and using a Throttle body on the back side of the Supercharger similiar to how its done stock, Since its a Roots type blower there is no let-off when you let off the gas and boost pressure will spike and "blow chit Up" I would suppose a BOV would remedy this but I don't want the sound.
In a twin charger setup the Turbo would be between the Blower and intercooler correct?  Assumption is the Muther of all F*ck ups but to me it would seem that pushing through the supercharger wouldn't work and speeding up the air charge at the top end is whats its intended for.
Ya'll are a great bunch of people and Im glad I found a place :o)

After doing more "homework" ie. Research on parts, compressor maps/efficency ive decided that the m90 is not efficient enough on its own looking at this engine it can handle what i want to do however and is in need of mpi to do it.  I will be running a remote mount turbo into the supercharger then through an FMIC thus offsetting the  efficency problem by feeding it cool air from where the gas tank used to be.  Still gathering parts and info will be wrapping the exhaust with header wrap to reduce heat transfer to intake charge and to keep more kinetic energy going to the turbo also acting as muffler I lost my full internet access temporarily will have full photo documentation when its back on. This project excites me way more than the v8s i have had in the past.  THE REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT IS FORCED INDUCTION

Well lack of spousal support and neccesity require a different approach... Will be rebuilding the 2.3 and seeing what i can get out of it with a ranger cam,header, some port matching and maybe a little port work while i have it apart.  You could say i look too far ahead sometimes i have been forbidden to buy car parts because apparently diapers are more important...oh well id rather build a Mopar too race pintos are for driving

Got all my "ducks" in a row...picked up an offy intake, 390 holley, and roller cam. Just waiting for payday to get the block work done.  Also need to get a new head as this one developed a crack.

it is not too unusual to have to reset our projects after we are in them.  I had to re-set mine and that is ok.   Just keep working. don 't forget your pictures.  As we get more and more new people, these pictures in the projects group can really help them.

Lifes been fun pintos been sitting in the yard since my x blew it up... that being said Its back on "track" a slightly different one Ive been kinda hoarding parts trying to decide what way to go with this car.  Looking at engine weights and swaps trying to keep the handling, transmission selection because i dont care for the a4ld transmission.  Ive stuck between the 2.9 and 4.0 v6 I have a bit of experience with both and theres a kit now to use them with a chevy trans.  I have a 15gal Fuel cell, and 9in rearend also.  no replacement for displacement but the 2.9 is a good engine. any thoughts taking into account I have the built 2.9 with headers and a stock 4 liter with money for the swaps but not enough to rebuild either engine Im leaning towards the 2.9

Here is a Pinto pickup build that uses a mini blower & carb. I may try this myself down the road.

That is Fricken sweet Lookin through craigs list I found a 85 Ranger with the TC swap started.  I picked it up for 800 bucks Im thinking of going  twin charged with it If anyones interested I have the Eaton Supercharger maps modified for the 2.3 but its pretty simple unless you want to build a 5500 rpm Max cruizer then the M90 is the way to go less power draw, lower temp and you can boost it over 10lbs... The M62 would be great for a low rpm 2.3 but whats the good in that?  Was considering this all in the pinto but remote mounting a turbo is a tight squeeze unless you wrap your whole exhaust and run the air along side of it its a tough go trying to keep the panels intact

im going to post all the technical information Ive gather for the project as well as all the formulas Ive come accross
Key
PR = Pressure Ratio
HP = Horse Power
B = Boost
PRAT = Pulley Ratio
BV = Blower Volume / Revolution
D = Displacement
I = Valve Overlap 5% per 10 degrees
HP=PR x Stock HP
PR = (14.7 + B) / 14.7
Blower Boost = (PRAT x 14.7 x BV) / (D/2) – 14.7 – I
Turbo into Blower PR = Turbo PR x Blower PR

To determine the CFM requirement of any engine Im not sure if it works in Metric because I came up with it on my own

Displacement x .29 x rpm in thousands ie 6500K would be 6.5

140 x .29 = 40.6 x 7.2 =292.3

1 Foot = 12 inches; 1 ft3 = 12 · 12 · 12 = 1728 in3

1 Meter = 39.37 inches; 1 M3 = 39.37 · 39.37 · 39.37 = 61023.378 in3

1 US Gallon = 231 in3 = 3.787 liters; 1 liter = 231 / 3.787 = 61 in3

1 M3 = 61023.378 / 1728 = 35.314 ft3  or  1 M3 = 61023.378 / 61 = 1000 l
and
1 ft3 = 1728 / 61023.378 = 0.028317 M3  or  1 ft3 = 1728 / 61 = 28.328 l
and
1 liter = 61 / 61023.378 = 0.001 M3  or  1 liter = 61 / 1728 = 0.0353 ft3

1 CFM = 0.028317 M3 · 60 = 1.699 M3 / hr  or  1 CFM = 28.328 l / min

1 M3 / hr = 35.314 ft3 / 60 = 0.58857 CFM  or  1 M3 / hr = 1000 / 60 = 16.667 l / min

1 l / min = 0.0353 CFM  or  1 l / min = 0.001 M3 · 60 = 0.06 M3 / hr

 Don't forget there is no substitute for Cubic inches. I had a Rayjay Spearco kit in my 74 hatch back  in 75 that would spin the tires with 15 psi of boost and 50/50 water and Alcohol injection . Number 4 piston burnt through twice after which I replace the 4Cyl. with a 351 big Block. I'd do a 289,302 or 351 W if I had to do again.
                         Good luck, Tony
