My Pinto ^

*I don't know hwy there are double of every photo,
I'm new here, so I'm a little slow on the forums, bear with me!

Got this off craigslist a weekend or two ago. It's my first car and first project. 1973 wagon, green with tan interior, 2.0 engine, automatic. The transmission does not shift into 2nd gear, that is the only problem with it. Looking into that this next weekend to see if it is a simple fix, or maybe have to buy a proper working C4. Already replaced mirror, got new wheels and tires are in the mail. The new aluminum wheels are 14 inch instead of the 13. A lot easier to find 14in tires rather than 13 in. The seats are rough, but the back ones are nice.
I am aiming to keep it looking 100% 1970's, even got a 1973 license plate registered to it. Great buy, and a gnarly first ride for me!
To all of you loyal Pinto nerds, or whatever, please enlighten me with whatever you may, I'm 17 years old with my first car, the Pinto, which I am planning on keeping a loooooong time.
-Thank you!

Hi mrmellowgold,

Welcome!  For your 2nd gear problem, it might be a broken "2nd gear Band" in your transmission.  You can buy a two piece band that can be replaced with out taking the transmission out.  I have done it before in a past C-4 transmission.  It is a pretty good fix for low cost.  You could see if a local transmission shop offers this particular fix for you.  Good luck with your wagon.

All Pintos I have had (16) came from the factory with a C-3 tranie. Plenty good but not the same as a C-4. If the vacuum modulater is bad or not connected, the tranie will stay in low till the engine is at about 4000/5000 RPM.   Easy to fix.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Thank you guys for all the information and telling me about the available transmissions. The only issue would be the shipping though. I found a few around here, but I thought they all had a c4 in em. guess not.
Also to make it more clear, the trans will start off good in first, but when it is time to go to second, it just sort of revs up and you can tell its trying to find it, but has no luck so it then goes straight to 3rd gear, or sometimes it wall go back to first. I sort of figured out a way to drive it just by shifting it to first, then straight to Drive when needed, but only around the neighborhood. But now it is on jack stands with the old wheels off waiting for the new tires to come in so we can mount them. Been cleaning the bottom of the car off and it is looking damn clean. No real gunk, just some trans fluid that was leaking.
I also want to get new, well, better looking bumpers for it. they are both pretty pitted and bent up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't 2.0's all have c-4s, and c-3s started with the 2.3 and/or the 74 models?

according to my research, the 1972 and the 1973 Pintos all had a C4 transmission in them (factory) and in 74 they started with the C3.

When in doubt, count the pan bolts/compare shape to be 100%. Link to image of the common Ford A/Ts: http://www.autotran.us/fmABpg21.gif

C4 has 11 bolts, C3 has 13 (according to the chart, at least. I have never seen a C3 in person. lol)

Sharp car, btw. :)

What a beautiful wagon! It looks like mine... only nicer in so many ways! Yours has lots of bells and whistles (bright trim, body-side moulding, rocker panel treatment, deluxe interior, automatic transmission,... very cool! Mine is plain Jane with her no mouldings or treatments, no deluxe interior (but it is avocado. lol) and a 4-speed. I'm thinking like dennisofaz- it's a band. If you were close to me, I'd recommend a great transmission shop that won't wipe you out financially. I wish you good luck!  :)
One can never have too many Pintos!
