PARTS LIST FOR A V8 SWAP?
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:23:31 PM »
Does anyone have a parts list? And where can you get them? I have read a lot of the posts on here but I'm still confused. ??? I Think Hooker used to make a mount kit and headers. One post said to use the frame mounts from a 74 up 2.3. (for the 71-73) No problem there but what mounts do you use on the engine? Also there is the issue of the oil pan. Are the Mustang II pans still available, if so where? Has anyone tried using shorty headers? A parts/location/price list would be great! Thanks all. ;D
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

i had a 76 wagon that i did a 302 swap.  it was originally a v6 and one of the frame mounts had to be moved about an inch.  i think it was the right side and it had to go back....but i cant really remember.  i think i also had to modify the by shortening them.  i heard the 2.3s were the right size and in the right spot.  engine mounts were mustang 2 and only one side was available new at the time.  i had a used one that i just welded up solid.  mustang 2 oil pan is also needed.  i dont know if that is made aftermarket or if a front sump race pan will work.  i tried shorty headers from a fox body mustang with no luck.  i had a set of hooker pro comps that had the rear 2 primarys running through the inner fender well which required a little cutting.  stock mustang 2 v8 manifolds also work.  i think the mustang 2s also had a special bell housing for the c4s also.  i know the one i have from a mustang 2 is smaller than a fox body style.  i think i had to do a little work to the firewall to clear it even with the mustang 2 stuff.  i dont think i cut the radiator support but i had to run an electric fan in front of the radiator.  i dont remember all the details any more, i did this stuff about 8-9 years ago.  hopefully some of this will help you out.
oh yeah, hooker did have motor mounts too.  i remember having them but dont remember what they looked like. i think they were just for the frame
Take a job big or small, do it right or not at all.

Look up Summit or Jegs websites and price compare on either a Milodon Front Sump Oil Pan for 302 or a Moroso Front Sump Oil Pan 302. Both work well. Remember it has to be front sump. Hooker Headers are what I run on my Pinto. I'd go with a MSD Ignition, Distributior and Coil Pack to give it a better look under the hood and some added performance. Thats my parts list contribution. They make manuals found on eBay about the popular 302 conversion I don't know if it is useful or if it has a parts list but that might be something worth picking up. Good luck

From all I have read on here the 2.3 mounts will work, the left side has to be moved back one inch. There are a set of conversion mounts on e-bay now but I have plenty of 2.3 mounts from my doner cars. Advance Auto has a Mustang oil pan listed on their site for 59 bucks. My main concern now is about the engine mounts. I can't find them for a Mustang II. Anyone know where to get them or will something else work? I wonder if the mounts on e-bay are made so a standard 302 car mount will work. ???

Beegle, I've seen the book on e-bay but I read on here somewhere that it is a piece of crap and not worth reading. I talked to my brother about the swap we did in '78 (yea, 30 years ago!!) and he said he didn't use anything from a Mustang II. He bought the Hooker mount kit and basicly just went to the boneyard and plucked a 302 and C4 from something with a front sump pan. He doesn't remember what it was.

The '71 V8 Pinto I had used the Mustang II V8 frame mounts, motor mounts and front sump oil pan/pickup.  The Mustang II motor mounts were hard to find until I discovered Brett McHugh on Fleabay.  His seller ID is bstang71.  He sells rebuild kits for your V8 Mustang II motor mounts for $100, or he has some already rebuilt for $185.  The prices do not include shipping.  I purchased a set of his already rebuilt.  I can tell you, I was really impressed!!!  These are top notch.  His motivation behind these was originally for his V8 Mustang II restoration.  He has had a set installed on his Mustang II Cobra for three years now.  I would definitely recommend them from him.  Just go to EBay and look him up.  As you know, most of the time if you find a set of V8 Mustang II motor mounts they usually now go for around $250 by the end of the auction.  Most of the time you can't even tell the quality of them, so you are taking a big chance just because they are actually Mustang II V8 mounts.  Anyway just a heads up for you guys and gals who are looking for a good set of V8 mounts for your Pinto conversion.  I did not cut the core support.  That is one of my pet peeves.  I used a pusher fan in front of the radiator.  I used a Ford motorsport short water pump on an Explorer front timing cover with an aluminum single groove March pulley set.  IIRC I turned the water pump pulley around backwards with a single steel pulley spacer for more radiator clearance.  I had about 1 1/2" clearance between the pulley and the radiator.  I used the Hooker 3 piece headers ( the ones that exit two tubes thru the inner fender behind the front suspension).  They were ceramic barrier coated and really were kept the under hood heat down.  I think this time I will use shorty headers turned backwards so they exit at the front of the motor.  Then I can take both sides under the front suspension and all the way to the rear of the car.  I do know that Summit has a set of Mustang II V8 headers for a decent price I might try.

I've checked two local parts houses for 1978 Mustang II v-8 motor mounts and they are both available from them. Am I missing something? I've seen this posted before and also seen the outrages ebay pricing for these. Do I have the market cornered?

What parts houses did you find them at? I checked Advance and Auto Zone with no luck.

The frame mounts aren't the problem.  The problem is finding a decent set of V8 motor mounts.  With the exception of Fleabay, every time I have tried to get a set of Mustang II V8 motor mounts from a store, they end up being 4 cyl motor mounts, even though they are listed as V8 mounts.  This is after I wait a couple of days for them to be transferred from another store.  They are different!

Super4ord, Thanks for the positive feedback on my mounts, glad i could help out.
I have one set of V8 mustang II frame mounts that have been freshened up,and they have all the  mounting hardware. I am currently sold out of the rebuilt motor mounts, but I will have another shippment of mount cores in about 2 weeks. I also do the rebuild kits in Red, yellow, and black. The black urethane kits are back ordered for 3 weeks, but I have 2 sets of red,and 2 sets of yellow left. If you need anything email me at b.mchugh@sympatico.ca or  on ebay.

71pintoracer,
You can re-use your existing mounts that bolt up to the Pinto frame.  You will need to use V8 motor mounts that bolt up to the 302 and then mate the engine mount to the frame mount which is what usually takes some ingenuity.  Check out some of these threads to see if they are helpful:

77turbopinto has some awesome T5 swap info - do a search and you will be rewarded.  I, too, am going the T5 route.  My problem is that I have a SVO T5 and not a V8 T5 so it is either rebuild mine with V8 internals or find a V8 T5 which are either very difficult to find in my area or are very expensive  :hypno::  High Horse has a fantastic photo library and is a wealth of info so dont be afraid to ask questions.  My project has been on hold for a while but I now have a house with an INSIDE garage and a digital camera so I can begin in earnest.  Good luck and good hunting.
