My 1972 Runabout
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:38:17 AM »
It's getting there guys and girls. I can't wait to see her done. I was worried about how blue she would be but I am so glad I kept her original color. It  made this 5 inches of predicted rain in my Oklahoma area a beautiful sun shiney day!!!

Thank you so much. I love the 73 it was what my first Pinto in medium yellow. If I get to see one next year at the Pinto Stampede I'm going to pay someone just to sit in it for a few. These cars are getting so few and far in between I didn't get to be picky. I was torn with keeping it original or changing the color. I tend to lean towards the keeping things how they were meant to be. I love the Pinto regardless of what others say. Glad we don't all like the same things or it would be a dull world.

Nice! Looks to be the same color as Fred Morgan's (RIP) 73.  Is that a Robins egg blue? :D

The color is 3B which was the color on the door plate.  I bought it off of Tim Gavin and it was supposed to be an original California Car. The Vin number says it was made in the San Jose plant. The individual doing the restoration paints cars for the Barret Jackson auction but I can tell you that although it's a nice paint job it's that going to be that high of quality but he does nice work.

My 79 has that powder blue and I really like how yours turned out. Did you do a single or two stage on it?

Dianne thank you . I am not totally positive but I think I heard him say a single stage when I saw it before it was painted. It had so many coats of paint on it he said he ended up having to use a razor blade to remove it all the paint off of it. He had saved the shavings in a box for me. When he got it stripped down we had to find a passenger door because it had been in a wreck at one time. I know he has about 70 hrs into it already and although we've been family friends for 30 years I am hoping he still likes me when this project is over. He said that although he is used to restoring  all kinds of cars he hasn't ever had a Pinto in his shop and it seems to be the most interesting to everyone that walks in. He said everyone wants to see it when he is done because they have such good memories in one and I've been asked by the City of Duncan , Ok to have it in their 4th of July parade. I know I'll have more in it than it will ever be worth but it's not going anywhere when I'm through. It makes me smile😄

My Pintos do the same, even more than a King Cobra to be honest. I love the year and the look of 71 to 73. My wagon is a 73 and my runabout is a 79. It's really nice to be honest and I love the color. Mine is that now with dark blue on the bottom. I know you'll never get what you put into it, but I think it's well worth it to be honest. Mine will be the same with all the time and money I put into them. You'll notice now that you could have a 70 Boss 429 next to you and people will more than likely look at your Pinto ;) I did a 70 Galaxie 500 and people we more drawn to the Pinto than the Galaxie. That's not why I love the Pintos, but it's just so cool of a car!

Congratulation s on what looks like a beautiful Pinto. I hope you continue to post pictures of it as you get it back together. It's a fix for me also :D

Thanks for kind words Dianne I need encouragement because everyone else thinks I'm nuts. I think the 71-73 are the best because they were in my day but I just like the early body styles. I have learned so much from you and everyone here as I am not a mechanic I'm just an enthusiastic owner looking for answers to keep this car well taken care of. I like the simple things in life and guess that's another reason I love these cars. Roll down windows, no navigation  , no wi-fi, and not a control panel full of options I never even used. When I retired I re-evaluated my life and at 56 I got rid of everything materialistic and have never been happier.  I lost a few friends  that didn't understand why but Ive always been drawn to old cars, old furniture and old motorcycles . This car kinda keeps me grounded and reminds me to just enjoy life if that makes sense. I'll be excited to get her back home.

Yeah, I'm 60 this month so I understand. That's probably why I did also. I have to be honest, if it weren't for this site I probably wouldn't have opened a garage, learned welding, or even worked on my car other than bodywork. I love turning wrenches now, welding, painting and just about anything with cars and bikes :)

Thank you for the kind words and I bet everyone else here is happy to see your Pinto. They become like chips, you can't have just one LOL
