Title: Fastest Pinto?
Post by: Underdog76 on June 16, 2003, 10:24:18 PM
Does anyone know what is the fastest pinto ever made?
I'm in the begining processes of trying to earn that title.
I am building a 76 wagon into a high to mid 6 second pro-mod.
I plan to chop the top three inches, clean up the body (lots of shaving),  completely tube frame it, add a four link rear and wheel tubs, wedge in a pro-stock 460 ci from Ford Racing, hook it up with a mean auto trans turning a ford 9 inch, as well as lots of safety add-ons.

It should go very very fast...

:o I have two words, holy shizod. but one more thing, why on earth a wagon, if your looking for speed, then you should be more consiensious on weight. a sedan or hatch-back with a full window would work best.   ::)

my dad once told me about a racer who did 1/4 mile racers all over the usa, named "grumpy jenkins" he raced his pinto and was claimed "the fastest 4 cylinder in the world"  on the 1/4 mile it was about like early 8's. which was spectacular in the 70's..
but i cant find any information on his pinto.. only his vega... but my dad swears it was him and said he seen it in an old issue of hot rod magazine.. but i dont know.. maybe he is being wierd...

I would be using a wagon if I were you also. If you have ever been at the end of a 1/4 Mi track in the 120's with slicks aired to 6lbs you would know what I mean. Its a wild ride with a short wheel base. ;D

The fastest Pinto I could find in the 1/4 mile was in 1973.It was Al Hanna's Eastern Raider Funny Car it ran a 6.480 at 224.50 mph

Don't forget Mickey Thompsons 2 Pinto AA/FC's that he ran in the early 70's, one driven by Danny Ongias (On the gas, as he was known). Hate to say, never heard of the Grump EVER running anything but GM products. Are ya sure that wasn't Buddy Ingersol with the worlds fastest 4 cylinder Pinto? I remember seeing Buddy get the car to run a 9.98 before NHRA factored the car out of existance. Them Buddy just went with Buic and ran a turbocharged Regal for a while. "Dyno" Don Nickolson and Bob Glidden both ran Pinto Pro Stockers back in the mid 70's, then moved on to Mustangs in the late 70's. I think that yer right about Al Hanna being the quickest, I hear rumors of a jet powered Pinto, but still no proof.

actually Mickey Thompson only had 1 driver for the Pinto's,it was Dale Pulde.Ongais,I believe quit the team right before running the Pinto's.Pro stock drivers that should be in there too are Ken Dondero who drove for Nicholson,Wayne Gapp and of Nascar fame Jack Rousch.

Actually, Danny quit after making 2 runs in the Pinto, then went to run Indy cars after that. Dale is still a crewchief/advisor for several T/F and F/C cars out there.

Hi guys. New member here. I found the forum through the link to my site for the Dale Pulde story. I run a website called Draglist.com that lists best stats and info on over 50,000 drag racing teams going back to 1949. After reading this post, I scanned the site for info on Pintos and thought I'd add a little here.

The Al Hanna 6.48 nitro run is going to be hard to top unless you have a full out Pro Mod car. There are a few other guys running Pintos recently that are tough as nails, though, and will make your job very hard indeed.

One guy is Missouri's Rick Pope, who went 7.67 at 183 in a Pro Street Pinto in 2001. The other is Mark Walker and the Texas Ranger outlaw Pro Mod car. Mark runs on the eighth mile, but his 4.40 best translates to roughly a 6.77 quarter mile time.

The Ford Pintos had the most success in NHRA Pro Stock, with racers like Bob Glidden, Gapp and Roush (yes, JACK Roush), and Dyno Don Nicholson beating the Chevies and Mopars with Cleveland powered killers. Grumpy Jenkins never ran a Ford Pinto -- he was Chevy all the way (in Pro Stock at least). His Inferior Chevy Vega ushered in the era of small block, tube framed Pro Stock cars in 1972 and dominated. A year later, the Ford Pintos took over as the top dogs with the better breathing 351s. It was a neat time for Pro Stock.

The best Pro Stock times I know of for Ford Pintos were a pair of 8.35s recorded in match race trim (lighter weight than legal) by Gapp & Roush and Minnesota racer Jerry Hemmingson (who has moved to the Carolinas and makes transmissions now).

I don't show any listings for a jet or rocket powered Pinto, but I may just have missed that.

If you get a chance, come on over to draglist.com, enter "Pinto" in the on-site search engine, and kick back for some good reading. We have over 8,000 pages of info and Ford Pintos definitely have their place in drag racing history. bp

Oops... I missed a guy. While taking my own advice and entering "Pinto" into the on-site Google search engine at draglist.com, I discovered that Ben Jones went a 7.85 at 175 in an IHRA Mountain Motor Pinto Pro Stock car. bp

I think another one worth mentioning is Mike Moran's Pinto wagon.  He drove it in Hot Rod Magazine's fastest street car competition in the early/mid '90s, before switching over to a Camaro.
I don't remember the exact times or speeds, but he was running in the 8's with a small block.

Well, I looked through some of my old magazines, and all I could find on Moran's pinto was he had a 425ci engine, and he ran a 9.24@122 at Memphis in '94.  Obviously he was on the brakes for that run.
This info is from the Feb. '95 Hot Rod magazine.

Thanks, gpinto2! I appreciate it. I had a high school pal who had a Pinto back in the 70s. He had it pretty tricked out for the time, even with the four cylinder in it. Who knew that he was on the cutting edge back then!   ;) bp

Good call on Moran, Straw Boss. I was at work earlier, so I couldn't fully search my listings. Here at home, I pulled together a list of all the quickest Ford Pintos in drag history, regardless of class. Quickest all time: Al Hanna's Eastern Raider nitro flopper. Quickest blown alcohol flopper: Glenn Lazzar's Funny Farmer. That car was a killer in NHRA Division 1. Quickest legal Pro Stock: no surprise -- Bob Glidden, who coaxed an 8.27 out of his Pinto just before NHRA went to the 500 inch deal. Quickest mountain motor Pro Stock: Ben Jones, as noted earlier at 7.85. Quickest doorslammer overall: Rick Pope, with the aforementioned 7.67. I only included quarter mile times, so Mr. Walker Texas Ranger is not included... Surprise names: John Lingenfelter, Jeg Coughlin (Sr.), and Jack Roush himself! Enjoy! bp

Good luck, underdog. Hey.. one thing I noticed when I printed this thing is that the quickest cars don't have Fords in them. That includes most of the funnies (who ran blown Hemis) and even Rick Pope, who has a Chevy in it  >:(

So... looks like the time you have to beat is the 7.85 by Ben Jones... that's the quickest Ford powered doorslammer run. Drake Viscombe did go 7.81 with a Ford powered funny car... bp

Hey, FatHeadInc... we mentioned the Texas Ranger Pinto in our first post... he runs the eighth mile so didn't make this list. We show a best of 4.40 for him, which translates to about a 6.77 quarter. He needs to get that thing out there so we can list a nice quarter mile time... bp

well I see that the fastest time (currently ;)) is Al Hanna with his 6.48 in a flopper. but I also noticed that there is no time under 7.0 since 1984. Thats just somethin we'll have to remedy is'nt it? :D
I was suprised to find Gary Densham on that list. Kinda cool that he ran one. The way I see it current promods are runnin low 6.0s with one 5.9 thrown in by Jimmy Rector, so with todays technology
a pinto should be in there runnin with the big boys.  ;D

With 63000 plus listings (only of the pro and semi pro cars), there is no way we could keep track of the hundreds of thousands of other sportsman racers over the years. But we would be proud to have you (or anyone) put their cars up there. Here is the ADD form:

Where in East Texas? I'm from Lufkin myself, but live in Alaska now.  Working on the fastest street legal electirc (conversion) production vehicle which will be a Pinto    Looking to take the record from John Wayland and the White Zombie.  Check White Zombie at http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/ and his post on www.dragtimes. com  under either Past Featured Cars or Featured Eelectric Cars.  His fastest 1/4 mile time is 12.151 and with some recent mods will be breaking into the 11's real soon.  I'm shooting for the high 11's when its all built and tweaked.  It'll all still be street legal as well.  What are you shooting for on 1/4 mile times?  You going with a 9" rear end?  See my posts elsewhere on this forum on The Electric Pinto.

Mike Moran used to run a SMALL BLOCK 1980 wagon. In the fastest street car shoot out mike turned an 8.83 at I believe 168 mph.Unfortunat ly I understand he took 2nd to a 55 chevy,it ran a 7.75 at 179. Would that race be a shoe box agenst a slipper.
