My pinto
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:49:55 PM »
Well, I've had this pinto since I was 14. Got it because my dad bought it for my sister to drive and she didn't want to be seen dead in it so he said I could have it and he had a 289 we could put in it. So I thought yeah why not and ended up restoring the whole thing, painting the underside and everything, interior is all redone, pretty well ground up restoration about 90% done.

Well, ends up I got to like trucks and had to many projects and it got put on the back burner. Soooo, 18 years later! I decided its been sitting long enough and I'm finishing it up. Got new wheels mounted today and working on putting 2-1/2" stainless exhaust and flowmasters on it thats why its on jack stands. Anyway, here is a pic. Let me know what ya think

Thanks everybody :o I'll try to get some more pics later today. The engine isn't much to look at right now because I have my heads at an engine shop getting ported and putting bigger stainless valves in it. I just have some old heads on it right now so I can mock up the exhaust. Getting pretty excited since the last time I drove it was when I was 14 and it had a 4 cyl with a rod knock! :o

Thanks for the compliments! I'm giving the tires to my brother but would like to get rid of the rims. Shipping is a pain in the  :showback:. Probly kind of pricey. The center caps are the reason I ended up getting different rims because they are pitted pretty bad and with the rest of it looking as good as it does I figured I couldn't some bad lloking center caps! Plus I just love the look of the wheels I picked. I'll get more pics up as I go.

I should be getting my heads back within a couple weeks so when I get the motor all together again I'll get pics up! ;)

Mark:

My Rally wheel center caps are cruddy, too. I >did< find ONE NOS unit recently - for $65. I hope I can restore my other ones at a good plater.

I gotta ask - how/where did you get such a nice dash cap?

It was on a parts car I had years ago and I just painted it to match the rest of the interior.

Thats funny, I didn't know the dash caps were so hard to find!  :o The interior vinyl is just like the original but I picked out the material for the inserts and door panels. I liked it alot better then the plaid!  :hypno:

Yes, dash caps are non-existant, hard to repair, and the usual option is for a cosmetic fix (slap a plastic piece on it)!

As I said earlier, great looking car. Thanks for the new pictures.

As for the engine, when you do the engine pictures, could you get shots of your motor mounts and tell us what you used?

Oh and I also put a mustang II 8" rear axle in it out of the same car I got the motor mounts off. It's got 3.55 gears right now but thinking I'm going with 4.11 limited slip after I drive it a while. I just know I'm going to need all the traction aid I can get!

You were lucky to get thoses mounts. I asked because those are in very limited supply and /or VERY expensive. A few of the other guys here are doing research to find a alternative mounting system, so have went to a motor plate. I'd like to stay old school if possible. Thanks for the pictures though.

WOW!!!! Wonderful wagon, it looks fantastic.  I'm sure it'll be a head turner once she's on the road.  Good luck with your restore....Lar ry :police:
Had a 1971 trunk model in High School, wanted another for old times sake, just purchased another in Washington State, very nice restore project.  I also own an all original 1972 Ford Pinto Runabout, one owner, always garaged, with 33,000 actual miles.  Life is SWEET!!!!

289, your wagon is awesome!
What are you going to do for headers? I swear that engine looks small in there. LOL! Cant wait to see some more progress!

I had a 74 wagon for a little bit. I bought it with a blown 2.3 and had every intention of fixing it. It was metallic Blue with silver/blue flames. It had 13in centerlines a full custom interior.  It was a Really nice custom but the paint had checked all over the car. I eventually had to give it up though.  :'(  Funny thing is i saw it 3 years later on ebay. SIGH!
I had it from 94-99 and never got anything done to it. :embarassed: Just never had enough money or time to have 2 project cars  I wish i would have as i really like the early wagons.
