1976 V6 Runabout back on the road
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:06:04 PM »
After a couple of months working on the driveline, the old Runabout is back on Detroit area roads. The car was purchased earlier this year from a private collection. The previous owner had performed restoration on the exterior, but seemed to neglect everything that was required to make the vehicle actually run. Much of the "restoration" on the vehicle actually had to be un-done to make the car road worthy.

Needless to say, the car now has three forward gears in the C3, brakes, and steering. The car is a '6R11Z' built in San Jose with a V6, C3 Automatic, and A/C.

I'm Just North of Canada in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. R12 is still available for service in Canada. Evidently it doesn't become harmful to the environment until you enter the states with it.

very nice ride, I like it.

I just had some R12 added to my van for the Tulsa trip, not sure if I could buy it but the shop that did the fill up didn't seem to think it was a big deal.

It is illegal to add Freon R12 to a pre-1992 car in Canada.  You need to remove the R12, and convert the system to R34.  It has been this way since at least 2000, when I tried to have my wife's 1986 Mustang convertible refilled with R12.  It was the straw that broke the Mustang's back and we unloaded it.  I still miss it.

I don't doubt that it's now illegal, but there are several shops that will still service R12 systems if you know who to ask.

Grear looking Pinto. I had a '75 Runabout the same color. It got squished between two one ton p/u's in San Fran in Jan of '90, but I hav ehad another one for the past 14 years, gotta love 'em!!

Respectfully,

Just stop at wally world and pick up a 134a retrofit kit. It is cheaper, better for the environment and works!
