An honest to god Hot Pants kit still in the box!  Maybe we should pool our money and see if map351 can make copies??

I saw those too.

If he reproduces the "kit", it would be close to a grand for a set by the time all the molds are made. Mike can correct me if I am wrong, but that's a lot of work/money/time to invest with no guaranty that ANY will sell. Add in the fact that he has not had too many people buy the parts he has made already. It seems that the "average" Pinto person is as cheap as I am (to some degree anyway). It might be because that people don't not know what it REALLY takes to make stuff like that, and he needs to charge a fair price for all the work involved. IMHO: He did not charge enough for that 79/80 valance.

Mike, if you read this, I have both a 77/78 and a 79/80 front spoiler, and a 79/80 all glass-hatch rear spoiler if you want to.....

I agree with CB, cost would be a big factor to most buyers. Also, with the front spoiler for a 71-73 only will limit sales. If they are made of FG, they 'could' be altered to fit the 74-78 cars, but some people might not want to try it, so the maker might want to re-work one and make a different one to sell. A FG reproduction of the 79/80 front spoiler (should match fairly well with this kit) can be offered for the later two years, but IMHO the style of the 77/78 CW front spoiler might not match that kit.

I would reccamend doing what you can to keep the price down, maybe by not doing the finish trimming, or other things that the buyer would have to do. I say this because most "Pinto people" I have met like to do stuff themselves, and don't like to spend money.

At a minimum, DO THE REAR SPOILER, you will MAKE MONEY.

I agree w/bill on all points... I would love to consider installing one of these on my 77 cruising wagon. I have looked at the kit on my car and think only the side pieces "might" work. Front spoiler could be interesting to mount if possible at all. Even the sides might have issues w/matching up in front of the front tire and behind the rear tire, they may not match up with the body lines on a 77 wagon and still look good.

and...

Yes! Spoiler!! Lot's-o-sales potential  ;D

i'll try holding the pieces up to my 77 to see how much mod it might take. it wouldn't be a big deal to tool up for two different front spoilers if every thing else looks good. id probably have to have at least 5 sets wanted to make it worth my while. i'm thinking we'ed be talking around $500 a set maybe less on a bigger volume.

The long side parts will fit on a wagon (any year), but not the parts BEHIND the rear wheel wells. With some work they should be made to fit. Having a wagon kit would open up more buyers.

If you make different kits, one to fit each of the three different year groups, and maybe rears for a wagon too (for the wagon kit detlete the rear spoiler), I can't imagine why you would sell less than 5 sets of EACH at 500 bucks. (in my first post in this thread I assumed it would cost much more to do)

HOW MANY people are watching your auction?? What is the bidding up to right now? How much time left? How many have looked at it? You might have a WINNER.

I have seen a similar rear spoiler ALONE sell on ebay for well over 100 bucks (I was out-bid). There is no doubt in my mind that the front and rear spoilers will make you money (depending on your investment and sales price).

IMHO: If I had that kit, I would PAY someone to reproduce them for me (depending on cost). When I first saw your auction, I thought about bidding on it just to have it re-produced (still thinking).

As I mentioned, there is no guaranty that you will sell any, but nothing ventured....

Are you looking for investors?

Bill

I am bidding and hope to win the set advertized for just this reason. He has also offered to sell the second set to the winner for the same price as the winning bid to the winner of the auction. If the price doesn't go to high and I win I will get the second set if the offer is still available. Then find/offer to let someone reproduce if possible in fiberglass like Map351 does the other parts. IMHO it would be important to have the person willing to reproduce the kit or pieces be someone we/the Pinto community know and trust like Map351 if he is interested. I would be willing to "donate" the use of the kit for repo purposes as long as I get it back.

I had the feeling it would sell over $500. even with the front spoiler being for the 71-73 only.

I would think that a FG kit would have a better market. Yes, they would be heavier, but they would be repairable.

I did win the auction and made the deal to get both sets. One for my personal needs and wants and the second to help save a set for reproduction. I have sent a message to Map351 and I'll see if he's willing and what can be worked out.

Thanks Dave, back in the day... I used to read the JC Whitney Catalogs and dream of all the add-on parts for the Pinto's.... window louvers, spoilers, hood scoops, etc... and always wanted to add this stuff to my Pinto's. Now that I am older and can afford to actually do this... The add-ons I wanted to buy then are getting harder and harder to find if at all possible. If I can help save this item I will.

I have talked to Map351 about the kit and will be getting him detail pictures of the kit (once I receive it) and the kit mounted on my car. We have also talked about the difficulty and time involved in reproducing it. I think we all know the quality of Map351's work and can understand that he is pouring his heart and soul into each piece he makes. It's not about the money.. I can tell after our conversation it's all about the quality.

Map351 and I also agree that if he takes the time to reproduce this kit as it should be... fantastic quality and fits as it should... it will be hard to get enough people willing to pay the price to make it worth the effort to reproduce. Thoes who have been paying attention know that not a lot of people have stepped up to purchase the pieces he has made so far and we talked about the time involved just in making the molds. Just consider the time involved in making the molds and then pay a reasonable hourly rate and that's just to have to mold made. Then add cost of materials, time to make the pieces and clean em' up for install.

All that being said... Map351 and I will do what we can to ensure that there will be a possibility of reproducing this kit or pieces from it but!! It's up to us "The Pinto Community" to understand that reproducing this complete kit or pieces from it will not be easy or cheap to reproduce with the quality we expect and want. I should have not been able to purchase these kits for the price I paid. I paid a few hundred dollars more for the first kit that is installed on my car and drove some 1400 miles round trip just to get it and I still think it was a good deal. But then again I do understand the concept that if it's not being made anymore and there is no availability of the parts... when you do find one it should be and will be expensive to buy.

I know that Map cares about quality, not to say that others don't, but maybe just more-so, and that's NOT a bad thing (it's what I assumed in my first post here).

Glad that there are people willing to save the parts for future use.

I still think the front and rear spoilers are worth doing. The 79/80 valance was a great idea, but IMHO there is more of a market with 'custom' stuff that would fit more year cars.

I agree... if people can pick and choose what they want (rear spoiler or front spoiler or side pieces) and mix and match I think it would open the market a bit. That rear spoiler might just be the most popular item as it should fit most years w/o problems.

I have 2 rear spoilers and both are made of fiberglass. The one I got with my kit is the better of the 2 but it doesn't look the same as the one in the kit. The other one I have looks right for the kit but wasn't made to fit (poor quality) my pinto and ended up being un-useable.

The Hot Pants Kits (both of them) Have Arrived!!!!!! Safe and Sound.

Map351 - I will be contacting you soon with detailed pictures of the kit and it installed on my car.

I hope to do some kind-of test fitting on my 77 wagon and 80 hatchback tonight and see how it fits.

I was kind of busy last night with the 77 wagon, took it out for a long drive (first time since last fall) and never got a chance to pull out the hot pants kit. Now I remember one of the reasons I parked it, starter is failing and it didn't remind me right away. I should be able to do some test fitting tonight on the 77 wagon and 80 hatch... I'm curious myself as I would like to use parts of the one kit on the wagon.

glad everything got there. remember before installing on your ride test fit everything . any where you will use double sidded tape pre clean surfaces with 3m adhesion promoter wipes (available at your local paint supply) or if your paint is really new use alcohal to clean with . works best ive found to put double sidded tape on parts before you paint then all you have to do is peal and stick. 1 bag of clips got left out of the box , will send in separate package . thanks again jim

Thanks Jim, I have a set installed on my 73 (I was! missing the correct rear spoiler) and we used pop rivets to install and that worked out good. I didn't have any instructions and that was what we came up with. I actually prefer the pop rivets to the double sided tape (I don't trust tape) except in certain circumstances. I know the new tapes they have these days are fantastic and should work OK but.. well I'm just not sure I want to trust them for the side pieces and front spoiler. After I get a chance to test fit the rear spoiler for fit I am guessing I will be using double sided tape to install it.

Thanks again Jim and I'll be looking for them clips,

Brian

here are some pictures of the test fit on the 77 wagon and 80 hatchback

first will be the side pieces between the front and rear tires. Should fit no problem but a minor amount of trimming may need to be done where they tuck under the car. No big deal, I call these a good/excellent fit.

now for the pieces behind the rear tires...

on the wagon (red car) not so good a fit unless trimmed, picture says it all.

on the 80 it was a perfect fit.

Front Spoiler = not a fit for the 77 wagon or the 80 hatchback, I don't know about the 74 - 76 cars but from the looks major mods would have to be done to make it fit 77 and up.

rear spoiler fits my 73 as well as the 80 hatchback so I think that will work for anything.

I didn't realize the wagon QT panels were that much longer. But they could be made to work just stretch out the mold..
Post some rear spoiler pics please.
