v8 t5 vs 4 cyl
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:16:25 PM »
i got a 87-93 t5 out of a v8  can i use this with my stock 2.3?
also have a v8 rear out of a 85 stang dont know the ratio but can i put that in with the 4 banger t5 combo?
basically a v8 swap withought the v8 i figure the ratios might be too low for 90ish hp
i do have the 302 5.0 from the 85 but its gonna be a while before shes ready and im impatient
another question, the 302 was efi but im goin with carb, aside from intake do i need to change anything? and it was an automatic aod so will there be issues? i talked to aguy who told me ill need a different distributor
thanks

Get a t5 from a four banger. Faster and easier.   the gear rations in the v8 are really better. maybe not for the stock 4 pot though.  way to low 1st for the hotter 4 poppers with a hairdryer i find.
anyways the input shaft diameter is different for the pilot bearing. i think you can get an adapter bushing that will allow the swap (don't quote me on that one) Plus you need a compatible bellhousing anyways.

the 8.8 will fit if you hack off the mounts and swap on a new set.  are you sure its an 8.8, usually found in 86 and newer. if the backing plate is flat across the top and bottom with 3 bolts in line its the small one and not worth the trouble. the pathetic engines of the early 80's didn't get very beefy drive lines. eitehr way the ratios won't be stunning.

as for the v8 change the pilot bearing when you do the clutch . i assume your gonna use the v8 t5.

BTW if you are not set on the 85 parts 87 and up are the roller motors and have better heads. but if your gonna hop it up a block is a block :-)
Modest beginnings start with the single blow of a horn man..    Now when you get through with this thing every dickhead in the world is gonna wanna own it.   Do you know anything at all about the internal combustion engine?

aww crap its a 7.5
im confused the piliot bearing on the 2.3 is smaller than the t5 shaft? really
i looked all over and couldnt find gear ratios for the stock 4 spd c4 i want to compare them with the t5
what combination rear diff and tranny gear ratios would make this possible?

http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Borg-Warner-T5-ID-Tags.htm   here is a link to a site that breaks down gear ratios for just about any T5...u may have to copy and paste it.

This link only shows Ford T5's but it does indicate the different input shaft sizes.  Reportedly, Rapido sells a thinner pilot bushing for the 2.3 to accept the larger diameter V8 input shaft.  I did not find it on their web site so a call to them may be needed.

okay say everything worked out (got the adapter, bell fit, all working order) what is the least amount of horses i would need for the v8 t5 to work smoothly given i use my stock rear diff?

i looked all over and couldnt find gear ratios for the stock 4 spd c4 i want to compare them with the t5

that is because a c4 is a 3 speed. the 4 speed is an AOD (2.4 1.47 1.00 .67) or AODE-W/4R70W (2.45 1.45 1.00 .70)

what is the least amount of horses i would need for the v8 t5 to work smoothly given i use my stock rear diff?

keep in mind that the c4 is good for around 400hp (but that is pushing it given that the transmission isn't new anymore)

I just gotta ask are you sure the trans in your cars a c4 and not a c3? http://www.fordpinto.com/general-pinto-talk/telling-transmissions-apart/msg100057/#msg100057

As for the V8 t5 it would be alot easier and cheaper to just grab one out of a 87-93 4 cylinder stang the gear ratios will be better for the 2.3 and cruising it. Atleast till you do get around to the v8swap then you can use the v8 one.
