How Far Would You Drive To Buy A Vehicle
« on: January 03, 2012, 06:00:54 PM »
This question popped into my mind while reading a fellow members post."How far would you drive to buy a vehicle.Back in the 70's (73) I arrived back in the states from over seas and purchased my brothers car from him (non Pinto) and drove it back to Garland,Texas. That trip was just a little over 1,700 miles.Since then most vehicles I've purchased have stayed at 200 miles or less.If you can't drive somewhere to get something, then maybe it was a not meant to be thing to start with.

I have about a 500 mile round trip to go and pick up mine when I get home in February. I will go just about anywhere for a good deal. I get 21 day off every six weeks so it's not a big deal.

Depends on the vehicle. For a Delorean, I'd go down to Texas where the DMC dealer is, but only because they can be purchased new there!

For a Pinto, 600 miles max.

For a Mustang, 200 miles max.

For a Porsche 928, also 200 miles max.

The only four cars I would drive a considerable distance for.

1973 Ford Pinto Station Wagon - Second Owner

Remembering Jeff Fitcher with every drive in my 78 Sedan.

I am a Pinto Surgeon. Fixing problems and giving Pintos a chance to live again is more than a hobby, it's a passion!

I towed my trailer 800 miles round trip to find, purchase and bring THE BEAST back to my home.  It was well worth the effort.  And I am confident that the next caretaker for THE BEAST would be willing to drive that distance or more.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

It depends entirely on the car and/or the circumstances.  I drove 1860 miles round-trip to pick up a car in Boca Raton, Florida - the car was nothing spectacular (2002 Chyrsler Sebring Limited convertible) but my wife wanted it and, what she wants she generally gets!  lol  I made a 1628 mile round trip to Tiskilwa, Illinois to get my '79 Continental Mark V.  My '79 Lincoln Continental Collector's Series was just over 500 miles away, my Lincoln Mark VIII about 360 miles, and my '72 Pinto was 169 miles away.  All involved round trips, as I simply refuse to buy ANYTHING I can't drive home.  My most recent road trip was in November - 785 miles round-trip to pick up a Cadillac Escalade EXT.  Sounds ridiculous, but I bought it for nearly $7000 under book value and a solid $5000 less than anything I looked at locally.  That was well worth my investment of twelve hours and a couple hundred dollars worth of gas.

I drug a trailer 600 miles round trip to Chicago to pick up a Pinto from an E-bay purchase, and have made a couple of trips to central Ohio that worked out to be around 200-300 miles. For the perfect car, or the car I wanted badly enough, I'd probably go anywhere I could drive home from, including the west coast. Might have to fly out, I don't know. I used to work in the trucking industry, and have a lot of contacts that could haul back here to the midwest if need be. But the trip is part of the fun!

Being able to drive your purchase home is always a plus. For those that have driven miles and miles, only to find out that the advertiser and your thought of "in good shape" means something completely different kinda hurts. As for "The Beast",if your avatar is the Beast, then yes,I'd fall into that catagory providing I had the funds,I'd drive to the earths end for it.Very beautiful looking car.

You said it, my friend!!!  The road trip adventures associated with my car purchases have been some of the best times I've had!
