Hi all. been a while
« on: May 19, 2012, 02:17:16 PM »
Good to see most are still here and doing well.
Really sorry to read about Hellfirejim.
Things are going soso for us here. My wife is in a wheelchair most of the time when we go anywhere now. I have sleep apnea and use a cpap machine. Also found out I have copd. Joy.
Lemans is still an ongoing project. Ended up I had to get a new body, the original was just too far gone to be cost effective to fix. Just got the new body last weekend, still sitting in the driveway since my garage door decided to get broken. Haven't really gotten much done with the car since I got it all apart. Working on a junkyard doityourself serpentine belt system for it that someone on a Pontiac forum came up with. Been accumalating parts for it, but the body issue kind of put a damper on wanting to do anything. But now I have pretty much all I need to put it together. Won't be with a different engine or transmission like I had hoped, but maybe later. Hoping it will at least be running by the end of this summer, if not totally driveable by then.
Trying to add a picture of the old lemans body on a homemade wooden tilter I built, again got the idea from the net, apparently this is commonly done in the VW world. Would be simple to do with a Pinto for those like me who don't have the welding skills to safely build a rotissorie.

Still regret getting rid of the Pinto though.
Russ

I will post a couple of links here, but can't do it til monday. don't have them on this computer.
But it costs less than $100, easy to build if you can work with wood, and really sturdy. I was able to tilt the Lemans body and put it back down by myself with no problems. And I pulled the body out of my garage with a chain wrapped around one of the uprights. This was with it still in the tilted position. The hardest part was to actually tilt it the first time, mentally hard. I don't always trust what I build.

Well one thing for sure if it will hold a Lemans it will more than handle a Pinto.

Call me lazy, but why lay under one when you can tilt it on its side.

Thanks for the reply and looking forward to the pics.

Here's the link to what started me on the tilter.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44539&highlight=rotisserie
It has lots of info in it. I used the plans that are in post 28 (I think), as a beginning. The way I build things is to just start doing it. No real detailed plans. Alot of this is dependant on the car you are doing, how high off the floor it is when you start, etc.
let me know if you need more info.

Hi Russ!

Glad to see you back... it's been a while.  Doing so-so is far better than not doing at all!

Your tilter looks like a pretty neat contraption... certainly a handy tool for working on lightweight cars like Pintos!  Don't know that I would trust trying to tilt my '79 Lincolns on one, though!

That looks like a pretty decent body you picked up for your Lemans - here's wishing you the best on getting it all together.  I know you're anxious to get it on the road and start enjoying it.

Dwayne :)

Thanks, Dwayne.
Congrats on being promoted (or is that too nice a word :-)   ) to moderator. I used to be one on a mustang forum. On a site like this is shouldn't be bad.

Someone has used that type of tilter on a mid 60's Ford Galaxy. It can be built as strong as needed, to a point. It is not meant to be used with cars with real frames with the frame attached. Pretty much just a stripped shell. Pintos, Mustangs, and other subframed cars are no problem as long as they are bare.

Thanks, Russ... I guess it was a promotion ??? !

It's been fun so far and I am just deeply honored to have been asked to assume a moderator position.  We have a really good group of people here and there is little needed in the way of moderation.  Hope it stays that way!
