DVD and VHS treasures?

The death of video rental has probably got people to build up vast collections, but which items do you particularly cherish? I got a copy of Cannonball Run II in shrink wrap for under 5 bucks and love it, lol. 8)

Also my Terminator Collector's Edition video cassettes in the oversized "two tape" box the size of a 12" vinyl envelope.

Wow!  I wouldn't even know where to start!  I have several hundred movies on DVD and probably still a hundred or so on VHS - it would be hard to pick a favorite.  They cross genres too!  For instance, I have comedies like "The Dream Team", and "Planes, Trains & Automobiles", musicals like "The Music Man" and "Brigadoon", epics like "Gone With the Wind" and "Titanic", racier fare like "The Notorious Bettie Page" and "Myra Breckinridge", really silly stuff like "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", and seasonal classics like "Holiday Inn" and "Miracle on 34th Street".  Out of all those, if I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably say "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" simply because of all the gorgeous 50's and 60's cars and the huge all-star cast.

It has been some years since I've seen it, but at the start of the film Starman (Bridges as the alien) floors the gas pedal even though the traffic light up ahead is red, because he knows when it is changing green. I think it was just a regular 302 powered fastback, not a Cobra or King Cobra. 8)

I bought a double VHS pack of Laurence of Arabia about 5+ years ago when the stores were clearing VHS, still haven't watched it, lol. ;D

My mom got me an import copy of The Omega Man on VHS when that title was hard to find, love that movie. It's better than Will Smith's version IMO.

Real "B" movie. The acting and story line are less than adequate. But the car chase is over an hour through Southern California, over 100 cars wrecked.

Loved Paul Newman's GTO in Slap Shot, or is the memory playing tricks and was it only a Le Mans? :lost:

It was so funny when Newman's team decided to play old school polite hockey, got the crap kicked out of them and then switched back to dirty play, lol.

As I recall Smokey & The Bandit played at the drive-in for 1 year solid, and the only reason they stopped showing it was because Hooper came out. 8)

Dwayne I too share your thoughts on  "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad
World". I had the distinct pleasure to see the movie in 1963
when it first came out.  The whole audience jumped when the
crash victim (can't recall his name) 'kicked the bucket' in the
crash scene, it was very funny. Too bad most of the wonderful
talent in this movie are gone.

It's a mad mad mad mad world, Oh No!  When Jimmy Durante kicked the bucket in the beginning, that just set the tone for that carzy movie "I'm coming Momma!!!"

That was "Smiler" Grogan, portrayed by Jimmy Durante.  He only had a small part, but it certainly set the tone for the entire movie.  As you mentioned, most of the talent that appeared in that movie is gone now.  Did you know that Sid Caesar was not originally supposed to be in the movie?  Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams were originally cast as the Crumps but Kovacs was tragically killed in an automobile accident.  Edie Adams, who was Kovacs' real-life wife as well, decided to go ahead with the role because he left her with some enormous debt and she needed the money, and so Sid Caesar was cast to play her husband.  That must have been difficult for her, but it certainly didn't mar her performance!  It is one of my favorites and I generally watch it at least once a year!

By far, in my opinion, is the movie Vanishing Point, the original one with Barry Neuman. The first time I saw that movie I was hooked, and still watch it from time to time. Great soundtrack and the ultimate 70's movie!

Barry Newman drove a red '72 Gran Torino in a great action sequence in the overlooked thriller "Fear Is The Key."

I think the fugly custom Vette in Corvette Summer, might very well have killed Mark Hamill's career. ;D

Yep, that's fugly and it very well may have ended Mark Hamill's career!  Personally, I'm not a big Corvette fan (stock or custom) anyway but I'll watch anything that features the adorable Annie Potts!

Yes, in retrospect she was the only redeeming thing about that movie.

Blue Thunder is very underrated, and there is classic featuring of McDowell's silver '80 C3 Vette and Scheider's '79 black and gold T/A. Plus the phrase JAFO (Just Another F**king Observer). 8)

My wife has got me all the classics. Gone in 60 seconds, Bullitt, Logans Run, Soylent Green, Andromeda Strain. But I think my favorites are Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, because I saw them both in the theatre with my dad and every time I see them now I remember his running commentary and laughing so hard he almost got us kicked out. Good Times. Oh and of course all the Monty Python movies and the boxed set of the tv show.

I liked Logans Run a lot, and it had a small role by Farrah Fawcett just before she became well known for Charlie's Angels.

James Garner did some great films when he got back to movies after The Rockford Files, which I liked too back in the day. Tank is certainly the kind of entertaining film Hollywood seems to have forgotten how to make these days. :'(

I just got a copy of "Used Cars" on dvd from Wal-mart for $5. It starred Kurt Russell as a used car salesman in competition with another lot across the street. There are a few Pinto's most notably one of the salesmen with a young lady "gettin' busy" in the back of a Pinto. It is rated R and not for kids, but if you're old enough - then it is worth seeing! I'm sure it's from the early 80's but the copyright on the case is 2001. Most of the cars in the movie are 70's stuff but there is also an Edsel in there.

p.s. I guess things changed alot since I posted last, couldn't get a cover shot from flickr to here, sorry.

A virtual version of my last Pinto. Was Registered Ride #111. Missed every day.
