Turbo and A/C same car
« on: March 17, 2015, 11:40:35 PM »
I would love to see some under hood pictures of a Turbo powered Pinto that still has the air conditioning. I don't think there has been a lot of these done. So if you have done this or have one like this please let me know.

Hey guys, what's up? My original post nearly a week ago now, and no one has chimed in. I'm surely not the first one wanting to put Turbo Engine in an air conditioned car. Am I in the wrong category or what? I think I'll be ok but I would like to see how it fits and witch ac compressor has been used. I thought posting some pictures on here would be nice not only for me but the next guy. I sure would appreciate any knowledge you may have on such a swap. Thanks,  TOM

You may want to post in the turbo forum.
Although from what I have read those two really don't play well together.

nice clean set up, done a EFI Turbo pinto over 20 years ago, used the stock pulley set up , including the power steering , battery had to go in the trunk , used the org pinto A/C , tight fit but it worked , I bolted up that compressor and hooked up all the hoses and belts and worked out from there, you have a lot more molded intake pipe now you can pick from the junk yards now to make things fit better than what I had to deal with years ago,

For whatever reason when I click oldkayaker's link to dholvrsn's thread, it just takes me to the FP.com homepage. I think the following link should work a bit better...

http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?topic=12916.0  (without the .html)

EDIT: Sure, now when I click on his link it works... go figure.

Just additional info, the engine bays in the photos have Sanden compressors and serpentine belts, which means those came from '87-88 2.3T cars (which is also evidenced by the short upper intakes and notched valve covers). Prior to '87, 2.3T A/C compressor were the all-steel "pancake" style with a dual v-belt pulley.

I don't know why it would be difficult to use either one; I stuck a big 3G alternator where the compressor had been. Yeah it's tight, but it fits. Now that I have some Pinto-style alternator brackets, I can mock-up the pancake compressor in the original location on the passenger side.

One caveat to using the pancake compressor; they are nearly impossible to find in good condition. They are welded together and effectively not rebuildable.

'68 Mustang - Built roller 302, Toploader, 9", etc.

Now I wish I made photos of my 77 wagon that I stuffed a turbo efi 2.3 into, you can use the stock compressor, and brackets , (V belt )  and the stock power steering , along with the fan, shroud and radiator , they made two types of expansion valves on 74 up pintos, one was a throttle valve and the other was a block type, the older one gave more room, I also took the exhaust manifold off the engine and stuck it on my Bridgeport and milled a inch off the flange and a slight angle , moved the turbo outlet over an inch away from the expansion valve and Made up the pluming to hook up the vam to the turbo then vam to the air cleaner , the air cleaner sits on top of the vam hooked by a U shaped tube from a 84 300SD MB , the tubing from the turbo I got off cars at a wrecking yard, the stock compressor works great on 134 , you only have to dump out the old oil and use the 134 oil for newer compressors. Mine was done over eight years ago and you do not have to run it on high on hot days, later guys, I will look in my box of photos to make sure if I have any to help, 🚀
