Mechanical fuel pump remove and replace help
« on: October 04, 2013, 12:30:03 PM »
A friend has a 79 Pinto with a carb 2.3 liter. The car has only 19K on it and the mechanical fuel pump went away. Getting the replacement pump was easy since I work for Advance Auto the hard part is getting to the pump bolts on the lower side of the motor. There appears to be some sort of crash guard wrapped around the pump and getting to the rear most bolt has turned into a Rubix cube of sorts No direct shot at it It appears that the driver motor mount and bracket may have to be removed in order to gain access to it? Don't know. Any help and assistance on this one would be greatly appreciated.
Yes! You saw it right 19K miles! Want to keep this jewel alive and original.

I remember cursing that guard on my '80, someone at Ford freaked over the Pinto scare, they even put a bullet proof shield over the fuel pump to stop impact from accident starting fire up front on motor. Talk about overkill...... .......I left it off mine after pump was changed.

I just replaced the mechanical fuel pump on my 78 Bobcat wagon and ran into a similar issue (at dusk, on the side of the road, no less.) what I needed to do was to disconnect the power steering pump bracket, slide the ps pump up to where I could set it on top of the windshield washer fluid reservoir, then the small arm that bolts to the side of the ps pump could be rotated upward and back and gave me access to the rear bolt using a deepwell 1/2 inch socket and a 2 inch extension- hope that helps!

I would like to see photos of this- I honestly had no idea a guard was placed on the pump of later model pintos-

Interesting... .

Believe me, buckos, it existed.

302 version around '79............ ....

Not the same shape at all but you get the idea. Some call it a heat shield, maybe they were getting concerned about heat soaking into pump to make vapor lock???

That radiator hose is close to the pump, could get kinda warm in the summer time especially in the warmer climates...

84 Ranger 2300 fuel pump is a direct bolt on and is upside down for more clearance.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.
