Pinto Gas Tank Concerns
« on: July 30, 2006, 08:29:58 AM »
There have been many threads on this, so I figured I would grab some and post them in one area. I will add some more when I find them. There is more info about this topic on this site in other areas too.

I am NOT posting this to convince anyone to drive or not to drive a Pinto, or to make or not make any changes to their cars. This is here for info only, and to see others opinions on this topic. Don't drive your Pinto if YOU are not comforable with it. ANY changes made to a Pinto are at the owners risk.

Some of these threads are long, but worth the time if this is an issue to you.

Please don't take a couple of my comments as cold or rude, as they are not intended as such, just MY opinions; they are not directed at anyone in particular. Yes, I could have edited them, but I did say them, and I stand by what I said.

This one mentions that the gas tank is BEHIND the bumper.

Driving is dangerous, NO car is "safe".

I hope this is helpful,
Bill

ADDED: The old links do not work in their current configuration but if thread number code is changed to the new style they do work.

Example: Change

 " http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=31&topic=5859.0     "

To

http://www.fordpinto.com/smf/index.php/topic,5859.0.html  "

I will do them when I can.

How do you keep dynamite from exploding?

Install a longer filler tube, a plastic shield, and change a few captured nuts!!

It still boggles my mind that there are people out there that believe that the Pinto gas tank ITSELF will explode. The Pinto tank was made the same way as other tanks of the era, with the same materials, but those other tanks don’t explode; why? Wait, maybe the tank itself was never the problem! Maybe it’s the GAS leaking from a ruptured tank that is the ‘issue’. This seems to make sense, as Ford did not change ANY tanks in ANY recall; they protected them from leaking.

What Ford did to the ‘exploding’ Pinto gas tank itself in the recall: NOTHING.

On a few occasions I have asked people that made a (stupid) comment about the tank as to what part of the ‘tank’ was the ‘problem’. Its amazing how fast they can go from being so smart and confident that they KNOW something and NEED to tell me, to a backpedaling moron.

There was another car during that era that was ‘attacked’ by the same person, the Corvair. Most people I talk to remember the car, but not the issue it had. I would ask here, but anyone can easily do the research to find out what ‘it’ was. If you don’t know off the top of your head you are in good company.

Sorry for the vent/rant, I have heard/read too many things bad about our cars lately.

Bill

It was before my time, but I recall something about sunvisors scalping people and suspension.  I also recall publicity films of Corvairs racing around sand dundes and lauching off the tops of them.... :nocool:
Looking for:  Rear and side window louvers for a 71 sedan, 15 inch aluminum slotted mags and tires (Ansen sprint style), and an Offenhauser dual-port intake for a 2000cc motor.
