Tourque specs & Bolt sequences
« on: July 30, 2007, 05:34:26 PM »
Ok now I know there was the question asked a little wile back by "tonyv" about tourque specs. Well after diving into a couple of manuals I've found them and I'm going to post the specs & bolt tightening sequences for both N/A motors (1975-1985) and Turbo motors (1983-1989). All this info came out of Haynes manuals but it's all here.
I hope this helps!

I wanted to know if the torque spec. and sequence is any different for a 1971 2.0 engine.  I've blown a head gasket and need to replace it.  Thanks

The 2.0 is a little different.

cylinder head bolts: step-1 14-29 ft-lbs, step-2 36-50 ft-lbs, step-3 65-80 ft-lbs, pattern same as 2.3
exhaust manifold to cylinder head nuts: 12-15 ft-lbs (71-72), 15-18 (73-74), 2.3 pattern is close enough
intake manifold to cylinder head bolts & nuts: 12-15 ft-lbs, start in center and alternately work out to the ends

My 71 Ford Pinto manual has a typo for the final head bolt torque of 39-43 ft-lbs with no steps.  I have used the above torques on my 71 with good results.

Note that the 2.0 requires special 12 point tools (similar to torx) for the head bolts, cam belt tensioner, and oil pump.  Search for one of Cookieboy's posts hear on sources for these tools.
