starting my svo turbo swap
« on: March 08, 2011, 07:46:52 PM »
after alot of debating between the 302 or 2.3 turbo swap i have decided on the turbo. i finally found an add for a 84 svo engine, wiring/ecu, and the appropriate t5. up until yesterday i was planning on the v8 swap but the pro's of the turbo seem to outweigh those of the v8s. my 1980 runabout was my dd until a few months back started a pretty vicious rod knock so its been parked since. unfortunately with all my preperation for the v8 swap (got the motor and the tranny) i know way more about the 5.0 than the 2.3. i'm really pumped about the lack of alterations mounting wise that will hopefully make this swap a simpler and faster choice.
im not really considering modifying the motor, the stock 175ish hp should do just fine for me.
ill do my best throughout this project not to ask alot of common questions allready covered on the site. i havent seen the motor yet put it was "running when pulled" hopefully doesnt need much to get it goin good

It's not simpler or faster, trust me. The basic engine is a bolt in, that's the end of the easy part.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

I found  the swap to be quite simple biggest issue is the fuel system.  Wiring it all in was a breeze and the only reason I say the fuel system is tougher is because I don't want fuel starvation hence why i went with a sumped fuelcell.

The wiring seems to be the hardest part of the swap for most that I have read on here. The 60 pin PCM looks a little scary I guess but a lot of the wires aren't used. Still not a drop-in swap, just because it is a 2.3 doesn't mean there isn't some fab work involved. :)

Took the engine home two days ago 500 got me everything but the rearend. Pulled the tranny and got it on the stand, fresh rebuild! Woo hoo. Crosshatching still visible, everything stamped, best 500 bucks i ever spent knock on wood. Lets hope the trannys is as good condition. Im still gonna pull the head and port the intake and exhaust, no reason not too, if i understand correctly i need to switch the oil pan/pickup and relocate the dipstick from my 2.3 n/a so thats next on the list. I got pictures but my keyboard broke on my computer
I want to go with a front mount intercooler but im on a budget, are my spare parts from the svo worth much, apparently side mounts are old news but its a fairly rare car

we pulled the harness with the motor and when we put it all in my pinto it was wired and running in about 20 minutes. a total of about 4 wires picked out of the harness and hooked up. The fuel pump relay. a positive. a couple grounds and a ignition. not a hard swap if you have the harness. we had to cut a small hole in the floor for the shifter build a transmission mount and to put the t 5 in we took the motor mounts off the motor and set it on the cross member and put the transmission on from underneath and bolted it all back up. had to build a clutch cable bracket too. And a 97 mustang driveline (perfect lenth) with 4x3.5 inch u joints. and a 8 inch out of a mustang II. not to hard of a swap and very fun to do! good luck on yours
