In memory of: my mother
« on: February 02, 2006, 06:05:00 PM »
The year was approximately 1970- 71. My mother was 18 & was going to buy her first car. She went out & found herself a 1971 Ford Pinto Sedan. Blue with dog dish wheel covers & I think blue interior. Nothing special, just a basic little car with am radio & automatic. This was the little car she named Harold. On its dash she placed 3 wheeples (fuzzy little balls with eyes & antennae) She paid 2000 cash for it & drove it around everywhere. It was her pride & joy. In 1975 She married my father & they continued to drive that car everywhere. It lost a few engines but she didnt care. She still kept the car, until a bad day... My dad traded it in on a 1975 or 76 (not too sure) Monza. It had nothing but problems & kept dying when it would come up to a freeway. It was bought back by Chevy as a lemon, & they then got a 1977 Pinto Squire wagon. I remember being in that car going places with her all the time until the engine blew up when I was 10 years old.... Modern day, April 7, 2003 my mom was in the hospital for about 3 weeks before the 7th, but finally lost her battle with cancer. She passed away on the 7th, at a young age of 49. I miss her so much but always smile when I'm in my Pinto as I remember how much she loved talking about her First car. the 1971 Pinto sedan named Harold.

In memory of her, I have named my car Harold II. It may be a 77 sedan instead of a 71, but I feel it fits, as her first Pinto was a 71 & the first Pinto I wanted & loved was that 77 wagon.... Rest In Peace mom. I will always love you & miss you.

Thanks. I felt that it was something that needed done since she loved the Pinto unlike any other car after hers.  Even defended it to nay sayers who said the Pinto was a junk car, although she did tell me I would never get one while I was living under her roof (no room for it at the time). Now I know she can see me from above enjoying my Pinto, as it gives me so much pleasure to work on & at the same time think of her.

The first time i ever remember seeing a pinto was back probably 12-13 years ago in my grandmothers driveway. I think it had been in the family but i am not sure....becaus e....i remember my dad saying that my grandma bought it for him, i think for $300. It was a baby blue 76 MPG Hatchback with dark blue interior. No options that i know of except for chome trim around the wheel wells and i think some kind of pinstripe down the sides. Something that my current 76 doesnt even have. (current 76 has nothing but an 8" axle, which the blue one didnt have...) Anyways, the first memory i have of a pinto is the blue 76 sitting in my grandmothers driveway on a nice sunny morning. Now then back on the 16th of november my grandmother too, lost her battle with cancer. I ended up with the blue 76 after it went back and forth between my dad and mom after they divorced. I sold it back in march of 2003. Really wasnt too much of anything left of it, but i still loved it and hated to see it go. But i knew it had to go....i lived in an apartment and couldnt have a non running car, and couldnt work on it. I was 17 at the time. Really had no money....every floorboard either had a hole in it that you could shove your foot thru, or was rusted so bad it FELT like you were gonna fall thru if you stepped on it. Anyways, i sold the car and now grandmas gone...and the house which had the driveway i first saw what was eventually going to be my car is going to be sold in a matter of months. The 6 kids are all fighting for it. I wish i could buy the house, and i wish i could have my blue 76 back. But most of all, i wish i could have my grandma back, too. Just thought i would share my little pinto story.

My heartfelt condolences for those who've lost a dear one. I read these great stories and thought I'd add mine. I hope no one minds...
My Mom loved Renaults for her own reason. She never had any use for Pintos. I, on the other hand, loved them since I first saw them. In 1991 she reluctantly took me to a crappy used car lot in El Cajon to pick up my $350 1972 grabber blue pinto. She remarked that it smnoked a lot. I bought it anyway. She  never cared much for it but she took a couple pix of me in it. I had to sell it to a junkyard because she could no longer keep it at her house and I was livinmg with my grandmother who wouldn't let me keep it there either. I cried the moment it was towed away. I lost Mom on October 15, 1997- three years after I sold my soul (the car). I miss both so it hurts still.
One can never have too many Pintos!

I havent lost anyone yet that owned a pinto but seeing as everyone else has a story, heres mine,  When i was just a little kid( about 5 years old) one of my moms friends had a 1973/74 Green on green wagon, thats the first time i ever saw one, I thought it was a cool car, Just before we moved from :the LA Area to Victorville CA, my dad bought my mom a little Fudge brown Runabout, Had so many memories in that car. She was Paired off with the car i have now, The bobcat back in 1987 I was 7 lol. few years later we got my moms old Cruizin wagon, my dad restored it a bit, got it running good, and we Sold the Hatch to pick a part. Well my mom doesnt have the CW anymore and my dad sold me the bobcat but I grew up with pinto's in my blood i guess I love the cars how the look and act. and that you can do so much with them.  and maybe i can get one to pass to my sons =)

Touching story. I lost my mom to cancer in 2001. My dad did not want me to have a Pinto ever, even though I watched him make several really bad car decisions, to include a 77 Monza 2+2 and a VW 412. My mom was an AMC nut and had a Rambler Classic before she married my dad, a Hornet around the time I was born, 2 Concords, a brown 2 door and a white 4 door, and had a 86 Grand Wagoneer when she died. She was always supportive of whatever I wanted and was the peacekeeper between me and my dad. I miss her alot. My condolences to you.
