Wow - had quite an experience today....
As I was heading down to the radiator shop to check on my gas tank repair (on this beautiful 70+ degree JANUARY day -
), I noticed the rear end of a Pinto two door (covered with a tarp) outside of a body shop on the main road, about four miles from me. Curious, I bothered to pull up to the facility on the way back, and I was greeted by the owner.
Turns out it was a body shop, that has no markings, and the only thing that queued me was the car sitting out front. The owner came out, and I stated "Pinto, eh"? He said - "yes, and we started walking towars it. I immediately told him that I had a '76 wagon I was restoring. After short banter, he pulled back the tarp. I IMMEDIATELY yelled out "a Pangra? No way!" He looks puzzled at me and says "you KNOW what a Pangra is"? I smiled....
OK, this car is a 1973 Pangra 2 door, blue, partially primered. It had been sitting in another spot for 20 years when he approached the owner. It has the original tubocharged 2.0L motor and all equipment. The doors were off, and the interior is 100% factory for the Pangra - extended dash cap, fascia, gauges, wood wheel, correct seats, etc. He paid $2k for it - a STEAL - though he thought he paid too much. His comment was - "Hey - EVERYBODY has a Mustang, but when you take something like THIS to a car show, the crowds gather". INDEED.
I told him about the PCCA group, and encouraged him to vist. Oh, his shop? It had a "65, "69 Shelby GT500, '69, and '70 Mustangs inside, being completely restored (we're talking tubular frames, smoothed firewalls, modern engines, etc....REAL special stuff. The guy is an artist. He also had a '72 Olds 442 W-30 - his mother's car - completely restored. Unbelieveable.
He told me that they will be pushing the Pinto back in tonite at 6, and invited me to come back. Even though I think it was a joke, I will be there - with my camera - so stay tuned. Sorry I did not have a pic to share right now. This was a really exciting find for me. Maybe I need to make him an offer...
