New Ford Pinto
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:18:17 PM »
Greetings,

Found a video on youtube that eludes that Ford might be bringingg back the Pinto. Do you think that Ford would do this? Looking at their line-up I could see them releasing a sub-compact car. Something to compete against the Toyota IQ or the Smart Car. At Beijing Ford intorduced the Start concept. Look at the links below and tell me what you think.

I like it, I need a commuter, if Ford makes it happen (here in the states) I'll add it to my 3 Pintos and my 2012 EcoBoost F150...
Looking at your screen name, and this being your first post, sure makes me think you might know more about this........

Yea, what DO you know?

I can't see Ford using the Pinto name again. But.. If you think about this for a sec.., they could use the stigmatizm surrounding the Pinto as a 'jumpin off' point where they could beat the media at their own game.. They will be so busy     Covering the 'pinto' story which would drive eyes to their new product- the would have a fantastic head start. They would need to address the older issues and with our help debunk and re-popularize the pinto with new fervor.

Wow, what did I say?

After they make them and the parts start showing up in wrecking yards we can go get parts off them and put on our old ones. Ecoboost turbo in my 72 sounds good.

I watched the vid & first thought was, it is a joke. As in ha ha funny.

I think the odds are better winning the lottery, than Ford bringing back the Pinto.

I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree with you, Derrick.  There are too many negatives associated with the Pinto name.  We all know that the bad publicity was unwarranted and erroneous, but the stigma remains.  I don't think we'll be seeing any new Pinto.

Nothing new posted on this thread in almost 6 years. I was thinking about this since turbo 2.3s are getting scarce for parts, and the SC T-birds are now classified as "historic vehicles." Also maybe these are more plentiful now since they've been out for a few years.

The Pinto I had I gave to my brother. The car was originally my mom's, (78 red Pinto sedan with a 2.3 and a 4spd.) I am originally from Tucson, AZ but moved to Oxnard CA :D
I'm looking for a Pinto wagon with an automatic.

Even more interesting that nothing has been posted in nearly 6 years is the fact that the "Poster" has 1 (ONE) post on this site - period!  Halarious line in the video, "He was conceived in a Pinto."  Must have been the scene in the movie "Used Cars." See image.

I think that the Pinto's themselves are getting scarce. And, yes the Turbo Coupe as a donor car is getting very hard to find. Back in 2007 when I did my swap (thankfully having owned the TC for 10 years as my DD) I saw Pick Your Part yards go from having 3-5 TC’s every month to maybe one a month in 2008 and thereafter about once a year. Can’t say I seen one in about 4 years now.

The problem with a lot of the newer engines are:

1. They tend to have die cast aluminum oil pans and fitting that to the Pinto's need for a front sump can be a problem.

2. Their intake design often drops down the side of the engine creating problems with front to back engine placement in a Pinto.

3. A lot of the newer engines are FWD mounted and have issues as mentioned above in point #2.  They may also not have a readily available front to back transmission they bolt up to.  Australia seems to do a lot of engine adaptations, but the unique bellhousings they use are often pricey.

4. Built in anti theft devices require adapting such things as steering columns etc. as you need the electronic key to make the ECU function.

Going forward I think we are passing out of the easy engine swap times.  It should still be able to be done, but you have to be smarted and adapt more that they way things have been done.

And direct injection gas engines (like the Ecoboost line) are a nightmare. The ECU controls or communicates with practically everything...t he gauges, anti-theft, traction control, ABS, stereo, climate control, drive-by-wire, etc. They simply don't work outside of the original car. A lot of modern cars in general (German makes seem to be worse offenders) will go so far as to throw a code if a dome light bulb is burned-out. As if you couldn't tell.

Doing engine swaps with those powerplants requires a purpose-built standalone "powertrain unit" from the OEM or a very, VERY expensive standalone ECU capable of GDI control. Ford's Coyote engine isn't GDI, but I can see why LSx swaps are so much cheaper and more popular.

I think this thread was originally an exercise in leg-pulling, BTW.
