Wow!  What a great video!  Galpin Ford in Sepulveda is still on Roscoe Blvd. near the 405 Freeway.  They have a large car collection and still customize new Fords (Galpinize them!) as they have for over forty years.  I noticed that the flying Pinto had a Galpin Ford license plate frame on the front.  I wonder if they were a sponsor?  Does anyone know why the Pinto crashed?

To see a pinto in the air like that is awesome. If that thing had caught on pintos would be thought of totally differently.  :fastcar: I think the mizar ended up breaking a wing in mid air and killing the pilot...

Does anyone know if the same company made the AMC Matador flying car that was used in the James Bond movie 'The Man With the Golden Gun'?  That movie came out in December of '74.
1 Pinto, 2 Mustangs, 2 trucks and an 07 Freestyle.  Maybe I should thin the herd a bit? My classic cars are for sale!  I live in Tucson, AZ :D

You wish you were working on your car?  MINE were 2000 miles away! Mine are now for sale and the AZ originals are rust-free.

Fred,
The tail Number is 68X , confirmed by the data on the NTSB crash report. Also it would appear that a vehicle and trailer were damaged on the ground in the ensuing crash according to same report.

Thanks Pintosopher.  I finally dug it up, I even found my airplane crash in 84. A.V.E. Mizar 210 4:05 PM 9-11-73 Oxnard CA. pilot 40yrs. old low hrs under 3000. Did have fire after impact. FAA reports poor weld, loose strut fitting, inadequate design. Now I want to go find the FAA idiot at Van Nuys that approved this mess. Talked to Tony on the phone other day he said sheet metal screws, I said what are you nuts FAA would never approved  hey I need to go see. Thanks again  Fred   :)

Sheet metal screws were debunked to me by Matt Smolinski, the designers son,- he has been trying for years to clear his father of that 'stigma'... I believe Matt's older brother who helped build the mizar would know the whole story- nothing like hearing from the people that were there building it. I sent an email to Matt letting him know the Mizar#2 would be in Knotts this April- & Brian's site link...Hopeful ly Brad, Tony and Brain can spend some time with him and get the real story- that is if he shows....  I'm hopeful- Matt always responds to my emails throughout the years- His Dad was quite the accomplished engineer- the Mizar was just one of his projects, he had many more that were very successful indeed.

After all these years, the Mizar finally has competition:

This puppy has already had many test flights and is nearing certification from the FAA.   Now, if they only had a Squire version!!!!

That would look tough with a Squire option!  I'll bet woodgrain4wago ns.com could come up with something that would work!  I do like the fact that the wings are permanently attached and fold up, rather than being detachable like the Mizar Pinto!  That design was its downfall (no pun intended) :rolleye:.
