is it worth this??
« on: June 25, 2012, 10:12:52 AM »
I found a '77 Pinto nearby that, according to the ad, has only 33K miles, AC, 2.3L auto, and looks to be in very good even mint condition.  The guy is asking 10,500 for the car, but that seems a bit ridiculous to me.  Are these cars really fetching that kind of cash?  Doesn't seem like the market is that good for these, but maybe I'm wrong?  Any thoughts?  I have a wagon I'm about to restore that basically has the same options with a rebuilt motor that probably has around that same mileage.  EDIT: I do also know that a car is worth what you are willing to pay for it but just out of curiosity I checked the NADA value and it is like $3500.  That's disregarding taking off 15% because of the 4 cyl option.

The thing about the Pinto is since it was bringing press last year the prices have really gone up in the publics eyes. The reality behind it is the car is still a Pinto & no, I would not pay 10 grand for that car. I wouldn't shell out that kind of money for the 77. While it may be nice it is a Pinto. I would offer him what you feel is a good price but be prepared to walk away since he obviously thinks it is worth more than it actually is.

As much as I love Pintos, 10K is just too much for 99 percent of them regardless of mileage or condition. There are only a handful I've encountered over the years that I'd spend 5 figures to own & they were layed out custom cars with 20K invested. This is just my personal opinion so don't read too much into it.....

No way...   I've had several very low mileage pintos, all small bumper cars, and the most I've paid is $3,200 and that cat is the best orig. car I've ever seen..... I watch the sales like a Hawk, never seen a stock one go for that kind of price..

I have to agree with you guys...it just always amazes me how much money some people think their cars are worth.  I guess too much emotional investment in them?

A mint Dodge Omni with 8,000 original miles that sat in a garage ever since grandmas vision got too bad for her to drive it is still an Omni, NOT a Hemi Cuda convertible. Most people can't grasp that simple concept......H ence the insane prices on average cars.
