any Pinto rally cars out there?
« on: January 28, 2011, 07:21:28 AM »
I have been wanting to make my pinto into a rally car lately. Its either that or a pro-street style buy I think rally style because it would be waaay more fun and usable. Anybody out there have some all terrain tires, big ol' fog lights, maybe a off road tube bumper, or anything like that? I've tried searching but haven't found anything like this.
I know where a 78-80 fiesta is but I'd rather have RWD.

It's funny you post this up today. I was thinking the same thing. This month's Hot Rod mag has an article on the Rally/Baja cars of the 70's. They talk about all the cars that were built to off road race, the Pinto was mentioned. I have a 77 Runabout that would make a great rally car.I could make a neat skid plate and tube bumpers and the 2.3 would work great. Keep us posted on your project. It's a great idea.

I started going through my pile of parts , 8"Ford ,dana 44, sway-a-way coil overs,  many sets of leafs I think I have to build new upper & lower A arms tube type for more travel 10-12", have lots of left over truck & Jeep parts. Need to design a well built cage & skid plate system. I have the drive train built NA-2.3 /T5 already. Got to do it on the cheap. Best part about doing a rally car is function over beauty. No expensive paint jobs. Hmmm  I wonder if someone has some used ranger long travel suspension they don't need any longer. Sounds like a fine spring project.

nice! build her up! ha   Would be fun to actually build a car you could beat up. and I'm sure you could find a used set up on a rally website for a okay price.

Going to start on my cage & sub frame connectors first, then design suspension after, I don't think I'll go the long travel route just yet however use really good shocks/springs to start off. I'm going to check some rally sights to help the planning stage.

Sorry to bring this back from the grave, but did the rally pinto ever get finished? I'm thinking about this for mine.
