Hi Mike. I give you both thumbs up for keeping your long and well-running '76 wagon, well, up and running! My '71 doesn't have as many miles on her but she's racking up memories for me as well as miles on her!  ;D

3.0 4.0 anybody ever swaped in one of these
« on: August 23, 2009, 12:11:25 PM »
Has anyone out there ever installed a Ford Ranger 3.0 V6/auto into their Ford Pinto. If so how much of a hassle and what is needed to complete the job-besides the engine and transmission??? Also I understand there is a member called Mutant Pony who has installed a 4.0 into a Pinto says it will bolt right in--if he is still active would he please contact me--I want to change out my 2.3-c3 tranny to a upgrade as both are worn out.

thanks
Lefty ;D

Never heard of the swap but it would be a good one. First problem I see is the Ranger is a rear sump and the Pinto is a front sump, so you would need to fab up a pan and pick-up tube.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

This is great...my ranger knowledge can help someone!!!!

Mutant Pony is on a ranger forum I'm on...

The 4.0 is/should be a direct bolt in because the 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 are all Cologne V6's, so they have the same block, meaning the same motor mounts.

The 3.0 is a vulcan V6, so its a totally different engine, so dont even try unless you want to fab some very custom motor mounts.

And about what else you would need to swap, not to sure on that...
My Pinto looks strangly like a Ranger, that's cause it is one...

will a 2.8 Pinto pan work on a 4.0? That would be a good swap if it will.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

We were going to try to put a 3.0 out of a Ranger in our 73, but the one thing we found is that the starter will get in the way of the steering! We never even got the motor close to the engine bay, so we don't know what else won't and will work! LOL

So what did the 4.0 come in? If I have a 2.3 pinto, to put in a 4.0, I would need 2.8 motor mounts? and what trans would I need?

I had a 94 Ranger X-cab that had the 4.0. It was a pushrod engine but good for 160 hp stock. Also had 5-speed but an auto trans would be cool. The later 4.0 switched to OHCams I think but don't know what year that was. You would still have to fabricate mounts.
I think that would be a good engine for a later Pinto.
