1978 Ford Pinto sun shade, a rarity?
« on: October 10, 2017, 12:57:49 PM »
We’ve been doing some maintenance on our blue beauty and decided to investigate an item that came with our pinto when we took ownership of it 11 years ago. I don’t know what we were thinking at the time, but we put this item up in the garage rafters and essentially forgot about it. Well, we decided to revisit this item and acquaint ourselves with it, and it’s a sun shade.  Our 1978 pinto runabout has a removable flip up open-air sun/moon roof and you can install the sun shade if you want ventilation but not sun. It has its own stowage bag which consists of 2 compartments: one to store the sun shade and the other to store the removable glass sun roof. When both are removed, then you have like a convertible! The stowage bag gets strapped to the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Who knew, huh?! Everything is in mint condition and now we have one more reason to fall in love all over again with this car! And only 30,000 original miles. Now we’re wondering if this sun shade option is sort of a rarity. Kind regards to all you fellow Pinto owners!

I'm pretty sure that came whenever you ordered the sunroof (I know it did on the Mercury Bobcat).  That being said, it's probably safe to say that not many Pintos were equipped with sunroofs.

We purchased this pinto 11 years ago on ebay. I bet you’re right in that not many pintos were ordered with a sunroof.

That is for sure. It is hard to find a stock glass roof in one, harder to find the slider.
I have many Pintos, I like them....

My 77 sport version had the factory glass sunroof and shade with the pouch.  It would store in the trunk if I remember right.   That is one thing that sold me on the car almost right away.

I searched high and low for an option list for Pintos but can't find out what their sport package was in 77 ... I think it was the first year and it must have been al la carte.  Here is a pick with it popped open.
