Right now its got a 2150 Motorcraft carb which is not stock.

Having minor problems with the carb but wondering if puting a holley on it would be better for the long run.

Already tried the Holley site and typed in my engine specs and car info etc.. but failed to match any carb substitute.

Do you have any info on the car? What is the year, engine, transmission? That would help with answering your questions.

The previous owner of my 78 hatchback with a 2.3l installed a esslinger intake manifold and a holley 0-7448 (350cfm) carb. He was preparing the car for autocross racing. The few times I ran the car before taking it apart, it had a flattened cam so I cant say alot about how it runs. I dont know for sure if this carb would work with a stock intake or not. I plan on keeping this setup once the car is ready to drive again. just one way its been done.

Oh yea more info would help lol.

Its a 1980 ford Pinto (the one with the trunk not (hatch back). It has a manual tranny from an 84 or 85 Ford thunderbird (Turbo coupe) 5 speed

Rear axle is from a fox body mustang unsure of year

Stock engine inline 4 2.3L that has a racing cam, Headers, Stock intake manifold (I think) and a 2150 motorcraft on it right now.

It runs lumpy on idle almost like its going to stall but never does

Runs high when letting go of gas to shift while rolling

and when I turn off the car when hot it knocks or clunks yea clunks?

Well the stock carb for the 2.3 Pinto engines would be the Holley 5200. Not too sure how well it would run with all those mods done to it. I noticed you said it has a racing cam on it. How long has it been in there and have you taken a look to see if it has a bad cam lobe? The "lumpy running" sounds like the cam might have something to do with it. As for the 2150 carb I'm not too sure but I think that carb was on the v6 pintos maybe but not certain. Either way it does sound like that carb might need a rebuild. What do you mean by "knocks or clunks" when you turn the car off when hot? I know some carb cars will try to stay running when you turn the car off if they are in need of a rebuild.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak under the carb, Verify with vaccum gauge reading, race cams are hard to verify vacuum leaks as they read unsteady on the gauge.. Or the idle speed has been set too high to avoid stalling. running on after shutting off is a symptom of the idle mixture too rich, or the Idle set screw turned in too far to avoid stalling. This car needs a thorough baseline tuneup, before tearing down any carb. This of course is assuming the cam is timed properly with the crank & ignition.

Intresting r4Pinto, you say it came with a 5200 Holley. My Pinto seemed to come with a stock carter carb 1bbl with motorcraft tag #E6ZE DA A 6 F 25? Maybe it was changed before idk.

The mods have been in there for about 8 years but driven very lightly to shows and on some weekends.

Now I want it to be a daily driver to work but concerned about the issue.

I have a rebuild kit ordered but need to find a shop to rebuild it.

Yea like the car wants to keep running, like the heat is pre-detonating the gas like a diesel engine ?

Yeah, I would say someone has changed it before. The dieseling you are experiencing could very well be tagged to a high curb idle. My 80 was doing that a little bit but I knew I had to go through the carb to make it right. Not too sure what the 2150 came on but never heard of Pintos with the 2.3 having it.
