what are the 2 wires for on the glass lock?
« on: July 28, 2012, 11:36:39 PM »
Placed in the key lock on the back of the glass 78 runabout today and was wondering what the wires are for that go into the locking mechanism?

thanks

Sounds like the rarekey lock alarm option! Hot pics? I've always wondered what it looks like.

hi dave, not sure if you are being serious or just kidding around.  lol  I haven't sealed up the rear of the car yet so I can take a couple pics of it tomorrow if you like.  where would the alarm be located if it is real?  i was thinking they were some sort of remote unlocking thing, but couldn't find were it was run to. then again maybe they are from some other car and not pinto at all?

thanks

could it be that they are for a 'warnig' light that alerts you to make sure that the hatch is closed?

i followed the 2 wires back into the frame and they ran through the door sill and i stopped following then.  they are yellow/green  and blue/black.  best of my colour blind looks. lol....  here is a pic.  if they are some sort of remote unlock, where is the unlocking button? and if it is a light/warning why isn't these on all cars?

thanks

i think that is the most common sense reason.

pinturbo75 is correct. they are to turn o the interior light when yhr hatch is open. i have seen this on a few other cars as well. i had a 71 that had this on it and that is what it did.

thanks for all the input guys,   a switch to turn on the lights does make the most sense.  puzzling though of why some cars would be built with it an others aren't.  I looked into the lock on the parts car we have same car except was built with a 2.3 and the lock doesn't have the wires, however, in the spare parts that came with the car there is another lock system with the wires.   :o ...  someone had plans at one time to add it I am guessing.   back in the day they had strange options for cars, one would think that a switched back hatch would be a no brainer....

cheers

One of the wagons I had I cant remember if it was the 79 or a 74 one I had a few (Pintos I mean) had a small white plunger switch mounted on the floor about halfway between where the lock is and the drivers side edge of the rear opening for the door. So when it closed it pushed in the plunger I thought that was for the warning light but maybe it was for the cargo light.

If you can get to the contacts I would start with a voltmeter and see if theres any voltage across the two wires. If theres no voltage acros them then use an ohm meter and see if theres conductivity from one to the other or not. Steady conductivity could indicate its a solenoid winding. Some small resistance. A switch would show conductivity when its closed with practically no resistance, assuming the contacts are clean so be careful what you o to us there :)

Sometimes you can pierce a wire with a sharp sewing needle to get electrical contact to read the voltage or resistance.

If someone has a latch with the wires and can examine it they should be able to get a good idea if its some switch arrangement or if theres a little solenoid or whatever in it.

I thought at times of trying to add a solernoid device to the rear door on my wagon to open it from inside or with a remote of some type.

Was playing with all the lights and turn signals today. (placed a battery into the car.) the back switch is 100% for a hatch light.  thanks all who responded.
