ranger header on 74 2.3
« on: November 24, 2015, 07:33:34 PM »
hey all, question for you Pinto folks.  I picked up a '93 ?? Ranger exhaust header to go on a '74 2.3.   When I removed the chunky cast iron exhaust manifold, there are these "holes" in the exhaust ports that come to the outside surface just below the exhaust port.  (must have been some attempt in the '70's for air pollution control?) The Ranger header does not cover these holes.  What are you guys doing to run the Ranger headers?   plugging the hole ? and how?

Tap the holes and use set screws to plug the holes. Easy fix.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Those holes were from the smog pump days. Air (oxygen) was pumped into the exhaust stream to assist in burning off the undesirable emissions.  I'd assume that with the advent of the O2 sensor the smog pump saw its last days. That being the O2 system is looking for the absence of oxygen as a sign of complete combustion.  As stated, tap the holes and put in a set screw plug.
