Pinto R&P Lubrication Question
« on: July 05, 2017, 11:41:05 PM »
What does a Pinto rack & pinion use, grease or gear oil?

How is the oil or grease installed ? There isn't a zerk anywhere on the rack.

Thanks

Once upon a time there was a specific manual steering gear oil.
The last one I had to refill, I concocted my own with a mixture of brake fluid, atf, and engine oil. Mixed it until it felt like the stuff that was leaking. Sounds stupid, doesn't it. It's been over 15 years without an issue.

its uses plan old black moly grease , the same stuff you use in the front wheel bearings , unless you have a power rack , which uses the fluld from the pump,  I have taken rack apart to clean them when the end boots come apart with age , dirt gets in , wears out the tie rod end and later the rack itself , they are suppose to be lubed for life , but if you are taking one apart to clean out sand or dirt from busted boots make sure you put the shims in the same place you remove them or you will get slack or a binding one , hand wipe grease on all moving parts , that should do it and keep it clean , dirt mixed with grease wear things out faster than you think ,

Thanks for the replies.

The grease sounds like the way to go for me, so it won't leak out of the boots.

dont let any oil get on the boots , it makes them go bad sooner , it just softens the rubber quickly , you should be good to go ,
