Manual pump, idle screws and weird heat tranfer question
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:48:37 PM »
Almost got my pinto on the road

I was lucky enough to find an old stock carburetor and smaller power valve

Thing is my car will not idle like it would run great when rpms are up but once gas is depressed it will stall and this issue only started today

I think it might be the manual fuel pump since I only have about $5 of old gas in the thing, maybe its sucking air ?

or maybe its the mixture screw's set wrong or a vacuum leak

Also my theory of carburetors is that the idle mixture screws are only for idle mixture and then the power valve, accel. pump, etc.. takes over once rpms are up am i somewhat right.

and one last thing my carb I'm running now is rated for 356 cfm previously was a 287 cfm

with the 287 cfm I noticed my block and rad warming up faster but my headers staying strangely cold, Now with the 356 cfm my headers get very Hot in a matter of seconds but my block and rad hoses and all stay strangely ice cold

Could this indicate one carb running leaner or richer than the other?

Could be the old gas giving out. I got a 1985 Omni Turbo with old gas that is doing the same thing. Put some fresh gas in it & see if the issue improves. Hard to diagnose when the old gas is in the tank. If you put fresh in it & it still acts up then other parts can be looked at.

Put $26 of high octane 90 gasoline in it today hoping that it would mix with the bad gas and burn

but nope still the same, replaced carb with my old one and nope

no leaks checked with WD-40

Next I'm going to drain the bowl and bottle feed the carb with fresh gasoline if it runs I'm going to drain the gas tank

if it doesn't then Pinto failed me and its getting parted or scraped
