Holley 350 issues
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:43:01 PM »
Anybody have power valve issues with a Holley 350 carb? I just bought a used holley 2300 2 barrel, rebuilt it, installed it ( may post a photo essay). First time I ran it , it wouldn't idle. Turned out to be the throttle plates weren't closing all the way. Re-installed it and it ran smooth as a sewing machine. Had to take it off to install the manual choke linkage because of tight clearance, put it back on and it runs like crap. It races almost uncontrollably and when it tries to idle it dies. After doing some research, it seems like I may have a blown or stuck power valve. It seems to be getting a load of fuel and is fouling one spark plug. From what I understand, the power valve shoots a load of fuel below the throttle plates when you accelerate. The engine did backfire, and I guess the early Holleys were notorious for blowing power valves if the engine backfired. Anyway, I ordered the Holley check ball kit which is supposed to protect the power valve from backfires and a new Holley power valve. I went with a number 5. Does anybody have any comments about this or suggestions?

Yes, a backfire can blow a power valve. I personally have not had one blow due to to a backfire but it can happen.
I run a # 5 on all my carbed cars and thet seems to be the best I have found. I played with a 1,2 3 5 6 and the 5 worked the best.

glad you said you use a number 5. That's what I ordered. We'll see what happens when the parts come in. I also made sure I got a Holley replacement. The one in there is an aftermarket part

Well, after a week of messing with this carb I put the weber back on for now. Just couldn't get it to run right. It's avery old model made for 60-64 Rambler V8's. I'll probably just take the plunge and get a new one. The other option is the Weber 38 DGV with synchronious linkage (both barrels open together). They also make a kit to make the 32/36 synchronious. I'll have to see if anyone has used one and how they did the jetting as I'm sure it would change.

I am not a carb tuner but noticed a item advertised by Racer Walsh for 350 & 500 cfm Holley two barrel carbs used on four cylinder engines.  Their printed catalog sayes this restrictor will eliminate the bog on initial acceleration (too rich) by reducing fuel flow through the metering block.  This modification may or may not be of use on the street.

when I ran a 350 on my 2.0 I used one of those restrictors and they work good. the 350 ran great, way better than the old DGA weber
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak at the baseplate to manifold or adaptor to manifold, since the problem seemed to occur after removing and reinstalling the carb. What manifold are you using? I've used the power valve restrictors in both 350 and 500 holleys. Well worth the $10. Cut out the overrich problems at part throttle. Good luck.

Both of the carb gaskets were seated just fine. I tested them with carb cleaner while keeping it running, no leaks or response to the spray. I was using the stock 2.3 intake. I have an EFI lower plenum to try later, but I just wanted to get the carb situated first. The first time the engine ran, it wouldn't idle, throttle plates were not closing all the way. Took it off, fixed the throttle plates, re-installed it and it ran really smooth and would idle. Took it off again to install the manual choke, re-installed again, would only run at high rpm and would take a few seconds to come back down, like it was being fed fuel, would die before it got anywhere near an idle and you had to throttle it to keep it from stalling, sometimes backfiring thru the carb. One plug was fouling as well as it started missing. It may very well be a stuck float condition, but when I had it apart the float appeared to be working fine, needle valve was closing, unless the float was sinking in the gas. Put in a new power valve and backfire protector kit and it made no difference. I'm sure if I buy a nice new 350 it will be just fine. This was a $25 swap meet special. There is definitely a difference in the way the engine responds compared to the small weber. I'll get one in a couple of weeks and try again. Thanks for all your input.
