 I just put a quart of oil in my pinto and wn to the grocery store when I got home a lifter was tapping :( I checked my oil pressure and it was at zero so I checked the oil level and it was not on the dipstick at all. I see a line where I drove in of oil on the ground. What do I need to check? Will the lifter quit ticking once the oil leak is fixed and its not so hot?

 I never had a problem like this in 26 yeasr need some help. Help save my pinto please.

ok well I found out where it leaked from it was from the oil tube that went to the oil pressure gauge its completel off at the motor. So now I just need to get a oil pressure swuitch for now to put in there add some oil and hope that lifter quits once its cooled down and has oil in it.

That should do it.. In the old days I used to use the lifters as tell tell sign, that I needed to put in another quart. Of course that was an old, in line six.

 ok well I replaced the sender piece for the oil pressure guage and although its not tight enough still ( leaks a tiny drop) the motor is full of oil and running and after a few minutes the clacking went away.

 But, if I press the gas pedal down quick theres a tap tap tap two or three taps, and it stops. If I press the gas pedal gradually it doesnt do it at all. I reproduced it with the quick pressing 4 or 5 times and its consistent, but doesnt seem to be rpm related but more from the quick start of accellerating.

 Im hoping its something in the head but I guess it could be a slightly loose rod or wrist pin.

 Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

It's possible it could be terminal. Are there metal shavings present in the oil?

Change the oil at minimum. When you do, save the used oil filter and carefully slice it open and check it for "glitter". Also it's a good idea for anyone with an older car to replace their stock drain plug with a magnetic one.

It always interested me to see how much metal would be on the end of the one in my friend's car. Got high miles & every time u drain the oil there's more. scary

 thanks everyone I thought I should probably change the oil and filter even though I just put fresh oil in it. Probably this weekend. It seems to run ok smokes a little bit more than it did and maybe lost a little power who knows it it comes back or not.

 I remember one time 10 or 12 years ago I had bought a kit to send an oil sample in and got back a report on the differen types and anounts of metal in the oil. It explained where each type of metal was likely to be from. At that time the amounts were all so low I was real happy to see it. Maybe a good idea to try to do that again,if I can find a kit or who does it anymore.

 Those magnetic drain plugs I saw on ebay before, I was wondeering then if  the same drain plug would fit in the 4 speed transmission. Does anyone know? Maybe I shoud get two.

You can make your own pretty easily. Just buy tiny disc magnets at a craft store or even Home Depot (larger auto parts stores may have them also). High Temp Epoxy the disc to the end of your drain plugs (JB Weld works also) and you are good to go.
