heater core.
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:48:57 AM »
My heater has to be taken apert and cleaned, I would like to replace the hoses and core as well. I have the glove box, console tray, etc off. Do I have to remove the whole heater box to replace these items? If so, where are the bolts? I know this was discussed before, I just could not find it. Thank you. (1980 Pinto)

yes you do, I provided these instructions a few years back, hope it helps.

heater core removal instructions

step 1 - drain the radiator

step 2 - disconnect battery and remove

step 3 - in the engine compartment disconnect the 2 hoses that come out of firewall (1 to the water pump and one to the carb going over the valve cover)

step 4 - remove the bolts for the heater blower motor and disconnect any wires for the blower motor to firewall.

step 5 - remove the passenger seat

step 6 - remove the glove box door and glove box

step 7 - remove the fresh air vent pull on passenger side

step 8 - remove the passenger vent and duct from vent to heater core

step 9 - helpful to remove the under-dash coin tray and radio for more room to work/see (don't recall if this is "required")

step 10 - remove the heater control cables from the heater core, do not lose the "clamps" that hold the cables in place.

step 11 - remove the power wire for the blower motor.

step 12 - remove the duct work from the heater core assembly

step 13 - once everything is disconnected from the heater core assembly... I "think" there is 1 bolt that must be removed to pull the assembly out... to the right of the glove box and look up.

step 14 - remove the heater core assembly, hoses will come with... be sure to remove the clamps before you pull thru the fire wall.

step 15 - once the heater core is out... pull the hoses off and get new clamps and hose to reinstall

step 16 - To open the heater core assembly - have to remove all the clips that hold it together, be careful the assembly can be easy to break.

step 17 - pay carefull attention to how the heater core comes apart and all the little pieces/flaps. A camera comes in real handy - taking pics step by step.
It's all about the Pintos! Baby!

I was afraid of that. I have many projects to do with the car so I can do that along with the other items. I can do all the goofy stuff under the dash etc so when I get done it won't mess up the new carpeting it's going to get.  Thanks for the info.

Now one can see why I still have the factory heater hoses and core in mine, just waiting to blow up...........
I did install globe valves inline with the hoses so it can be easily shut off and bypassed on the road.

I had an MG years ago that had a regular valve with a round handle on the engine to shut the heater off! Factory!

I said this in another thread & it's worth saying again. Get the best heater hose you can find(I used extreme service hose for semi's) & quality(expensive) hose clamps if you do this. This is not the time to skimp & use cheapie AutoZone crap. We are only talking 10 bucks here anyways. 2 feet of good hose @3 bucks a foot & 2 quality clamps @2 bucks each. You can penny pinch elsewhere..... .

The heater hoses from the heater core through the firewall were not avaliable anywhere, I ended up matching up the orginal hoses to in-stock hoses at the local automotive parts shop. This was costly as the hoses ended up running close to $30.00. I found after putting it all back together , it would have just been easier and cheaper  to use bulk straight heater hose straight through the firewall to the factory steel lines that run along the valve cover.

If you have to replace the heater core I also found using the window foam insulation with the sticky tape end ( avaliable at any home inprovement store) works well to seal the air box when you put it back together , the orginal seal will fall apart.

Also becareful removing the relay mounted on the air box under the dash on the  passengerside, its a Pain in the **** to find a used replacement in good working order.

When I replaced the core hoses on my 73 station wagon (with AC) I went to the local auto parts store and bought some preformed hoses for another vehicle and cut out the sections that matched what I needed.

The hoses aren't regular 5/8 heater hose? That is what the water pump to the heater system had on my car when I replaced it. The heater is different?

Isn't that why the hoses change to the steel lines along the valve cover ?

Problem with regular heater hose is that it will crimp between the core/box and the firewall, blocking any water flow.  I have copper elbows brazed together to make the bends in mine.
