headers for a 1972 v8 swap
« on: February 08, 2012, 07:16:25 PM »
Does anyone know of a header that will fit/work that does'nt require reverse side upside mounting etc?

Bolt in? there is only one setup that is still made. Hooker Swap headers. They run all over and cost about $600

Hedman also has a setup for the boss headed 351C but those are near $1000

I custom made mine from Mustang II V8 Headers.

I've seen them listed at Headman & several other places. But they are not made any more or in stock any place that I have contacted.
If you see new ones listed some place, let me know, as I need a set !

I have a brand new pair of hooker 6 pc. through the fender well headers, however in order to use them I will have to locate the engine about an inch higher than I really want to.

Sounds like that is the 351w setup? can you see the part numb in the flange. That would tell for sure. If is is maybe you could off them on ebay (at a loss of course) and then purchase another new set for the 302 from summit?
Without lots of fab work, and lots of mandrel bends, its near impossible to have a clean header install on these swaps.

Months ago when I saw that type for my B2 application I sent them an e-mail to confirm they have them. They do not & cannot get them. They said they were going to pull the ad , but still have not done so. Not sure what is up with that.

I sent Headman an e-mail asking if I could get a list of places they had sold them to. Because you never know, maybe a set was sitting on a back shelf someplace collecting dust. No reply on that one.....

I've owned these hookers since 1983 just waiting for the day. Well the day has come. they are indeed listed as for 289/302 ci.. Making these fit is not impossible--- just not preferable.

If I remember right, they are for a 302w.

I have a BOSS 302. Huge difference.

Hey Reeves,
Have you checked out the recent Car Craft? They document on building your own headers. Some of the ins and outs, how to lay them out, welding the flange etc.
They did some wild ones for a Gasser Fairmont with a stack injected 4.6 mod motor. They werent professionally tig welded either. Just a "regular" mig.
I don't know about your fab skills but hey threes so much help out there nowadays that its almost a "do you want to" and "do i have any time at all" issue more than some freaky zen deal on building your own headers.  Oh yah and you do need a good amount of patience !!

After redoing my Mustang II headers with some bends from Jc Whitney,a few cut off wheels, a saws all, my mapp gas torch, and my inner shield welder (yep not even a true mig, lots of flap wheel grinding!) and 6 weeks  of weekends  I had them finished and they fit like a glove. Well sort of. I still made a few minor dents here and there in the foot well etc. But the satisfaction of doing it myself is almost indescribable!

Dont get me wrong, I had no preconceived notions of doing this from the get go. I was mislead by another V8 pinto guy (not from here) out on the internet who said his Cyclone/blackjack mustang II headers fit perfectly. When i got them they actually came somewhat close. If you wanted the headers to sit on the 71s cable steering shaft that is! SO i ended up staring at them for a couple of hours like they were going to fix themselves. Then my buddy came over and said " why dont you just cut these tubes out and re-rout them? Course it sounded easier than it ended up being but i said "Well i guess i have no choice" and then started to cut and never looked back.

Just some food for thought!
Good luck!

Hi Reeves1; I should have realized from some of your previous posts that you were dealing with cleveland heads , and yes you are right - big difference. I do however know of a pair of hooker 6160's for sale on the east coast. If anyone is interested let me know, and I'll put you in touch.
