Title: gas tank explosion
Post by: SunnyPinto on March 04, 2005, 01:27:19 AM
I just bought a 1977 Pinto hatchback in mint condition.  It's my first older car and I love it but everyone keeps telling me I am going  to blow up. Now I don't want o drive it!!  I'm only 25 and I'm a chick and my brother collects old cars and he says I'm stupid for worrying so now I am secretly asking questions in Pinto chatrooms!!! I read somewhere that the 77's were safe but I don't know who to ask?     Does anyone out there know anything?  Somebody...... .please help me!!

Look under the car between the rear axle and the gas tank. You should see a thick plastic shield about 1/4 inch thick If you have it then you are okay and you won't blow up. My 73  had one, I got rear ended and I am still here. I only had 73 Pintos so yours may be slightly different but that is what mine had.

It wasn't really a problem to begin with...Contrar y to what that one media source (who was heavily funded by GM at the time) wanted you to beleive.

Of the millions of pintos produced, there were only like 8 cases of Fire from rear-collisions.

No, it really was a problem....and it did cost Ford dearly, in money and in customers. It was proven that Ford did Know the concern of rear impacts on the Pinto, but chose to turn the other cheek save a few bucks to keep prices down....rememb er under $2000 was the goal! Thats why there was a recall

And what's worse about the Crown Vic incidents?? Cop cars are involved in this one... I tell ya, Ford's gotten dumber over the years... From the exploding Pinto to the exploding cop car... will they ever learn?

Checy's don't explode??? Tell that to the owners of the CHEVY trucks from the 1980's that blew up, and why? Because CHEVY put the gas tanks outside of the framerails on them, so when it was hit in the side, BOOM!!!

Seems they didn't learn from Ford's mistake on the Pinto.

just my $.02 worth.... No automaker is perfect, and neither are there cars.. If they were I wouldn't have a job, as they would never break down.

Hey, who's the wiseguy that added "Inferior" to my earlier post about the Vagrant, oops...I mean Vega?!? I did not put that word in there, even though I may agree with it!!  ;D

My take on the whole situation on the gas tanks was that Ford`s knew of the problem and other car makers of the time were jut as bad or worse BUT Ford was caught weighing the cost of the fix vs the cost of the payouts..I found this excerpt from       home.att.net/~Resurgence/Pinto.htm ..         " One of the tools that Ford used to argue for the delay was a "cost-benefit analysis" of altering the fuel tanks. According to Ford's estimates, the unsafe tanks would cause 180 burn deaths, 180 serious burn injuries, and 2,100 burned vehicles each year. It calculated that it would have to pay $200,000 per death, $67,000 per injury, and $700 per vehicle, for a total of $49.5 million. However, the cost of saving lives and injuries ran even higher: alterations would cost $11 per car or truck, which added up to $137 million per year. Essentially, Ford argued before the government that it would be cheaper just to let their customers burn! "

I have never told anyone about the hidden stuff on the site until now.. I actually forgot until I saw this thread. It was fun coding the site & sticking stuff here & there to see if anyone saw it. A little disappointing when they were not found....

Hey 79panel,  Im going to go look in the gallery I think I remember seeing something somewhere about a stretch pinto.....
Title: Re: gas tank explosion
Post by: wagonmaster on May 05, 2005, 10:54:56 PM
I did the same. I didn't find anything that either mentioned "Stretch Pinto" or looked like one. there was a chopped wagon, a modified, and a funny car, but that's all I could find that was beyond a fairly stock body.  ???

Yeah, he's probably sittin' back with a brewski and LHAO at these two fools that are trying to find something about a "Stretch Pinto". Scott actually spelled it "Strech" instead of "Stretch". I wonder if that was just a misspelling or if it is significant?!?  ???

dunno,  i tried a search on strech, too.

Every time a Chevy guy gives me crap about exploding Pintos I remind him that at least someone had to hit the Pinto to get it to blow up. All you had to do was get in and DRIVE a Corvair and it could burst into flames.
