Engine help!
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:05:24 PM »
Hey there...I'm new here and have a few questions for the knowledgable masses.  18 years ago I bought an early '70s Pinto engine and installed it into my 1947 Willys Jeep...a fairly easy conversion at that time.  I sold the Jeep, and now have it back!!  I really know very little about the engine.

My main questions are: 1) how to tell exactly what it is (1.6, 1.8, 2.0, etc)  2) are there suggestions for a newer engine that has the same bellhousing, perhaps something with TBI,  3)  my carb seems to really run rich and the engine is terribly sluggish and low on power.  I have minimal experience with carbs and I know this one has been tinkered with in ways it probably didn't like (and it lives at 7,700 ft)...what can I do? (rebuild, reinvent, retire, reexamine my brain?)

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Remember, i'm a Jeep guy, I drive slow over bumpy roads.  My brain follows suit.  Assume I don't know what you're talking about and give me details.  It won't hurt my feelings.  I may just drive over your car, though, if you get too out of hand. Thanks so much!!!!

Thanks for the info.  It does have an overhead cam and a two barrel carb.  I don't have any pictures to post yet, but I think we're making progress.

Any suggestions for a motor upgrade that would keep the stock BH?  Or anyone who does quality rebuilds of the stock 2-barrel?  Thanks again!!!

Eric
