Ok, been setting the timing right on the marks, point gap is perfect, new point and condenser. Car is warmer up and ready to drive, pull out drive 4 to 6 miles, it stall's for a millasecount and it goes out of time. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figgure out what I'm doing wrong. Its a rebuilt 2.0 with a 4 speed. Don't know it I should go and buy another Dist. and try that. The aux. shaft looks good from what I can see looking thru the dist. hole.
any ideas from you folks

Out of curiosity have you checked the cam timing to see if that may be off?

Everything lines up like its suppost too, kinda sick of getting it running good only to last a few miles

The way it sounds if everything is lining up it very well could be a bad distributor. sounds like it's got some wear in the distributor shaft.

Do you just need to move the distributor a little or do you need to pull it & drop it in a tooth over each time?

Check the gear on the distributor & see if it's pinned to the shaft or moving.

Just need to move the dist. a little to get it back running decent, if you hold the top of the dist shaft there is some play when twisting the geared end at the bottom. Is it suppost to be solid top to bottom?

I believe so. I don't think you're supposed to be able to move the bottom gear if holding the top. Sounds like there could be the problem.

Just to clarify, there is a small amount of play when twisting the rotor and holding the gear. I believe this is due to the centrifical advance mechanism in there.

Can you see light through the gear roll pin? If not, the roll pin may be sheared. Is the timing jumping in the same direction?
Since it is warm up related, maybe the vacuum circuit is flaky. Try disconnecting the vacuum advance and see if the the timing jump reoccurs. Is the timing jumping back and forth in direction?
Disassemble the top of the distributor to inspect the centrifical advance stuff.
A remote possibility is that the auxiliary shaft to pulley key is sheared. This would also cause the timing to jump in the same direction.

Since you said the belt has not skipped a tooth and the gears have their teeth, I can not suggest anything else. Good luck with the search.
