73 2.0 timing crankcase gear , will not come off.
« on: August 21, 2017, 09:43:24 AM »
I have an oil seal leak behind the timing crank gear. Can anyone tell me where to get a strong 3" small ear pulley ? Tried Everything & all found on internet. Gear has alumn flange around it & only has 2 areas open-were timing belt goes thru. No threaded holes on gear.
Want to get car back to shows, 100% original & looks fantastic.
If anyone knows were I can get a gear & key way, most likly need that also.
Starting to look  overseas.

If your talking about removing the gear / pulley that drives the timing belt and is on the crankshaft. Ford made a special tool for that. I have seen them on E-gay from time to time. High $$$$ item but necessary if the gear / pulley is stuck on the crankshaft. I know of no other way to remove it.

This was my cheap and coarse solution to removing the crank gear pulley, two pieces of angle iron, a steering wheel puller, some nuts and bolts and a piece of wire. You cut one side off of the angle iron over a length of the thickness of the pulley, and the required lip to go behind the pulley. You then bend the end of the flat iron to form a lip to go behind the pulley. It's a matter of trial and modifying to get them to slide in through the two openings and get the lip behind the gear.
Don't put any force on the aluminum flange, it will break!
Use lots of wd40 or equivalent (starting a week before the removal attempt if possible).
I loosely refitted the crank pulley bolt with space left to allow the pulley to come off , and used a piece of pipe to prevent the puller bolt sliding off the crank pulley bolt.
When the puller is under tension, hit it with a hammer every once in a while, the "shock" may just give that little extra to loosen the pulley.
Take your time and be patient.

I LOVE it!  :)  Reminds me of the Dana 44 case spreader I made for my Sunbeam Tiger.

Three scraps of steel and two bolts to hold them. Two hex bolts with the head rounded off and ever so slightly taper to "bite" into the case holes.  Two bolts and threaded clamp halves from a McPherson strut spring compressor. And, like you, a piece of tubing to keep the bolts on track in the center.

If all else fails, try heating the pulley but NOT the crankshaft.

thought I'd add a more detailed pic of the crank belt pulley puller hooks. I used L-iron 1,18x1,18 inch (3x3cm).
To be able to bend the hook like this, you obviously have to make it longer, put it in a vice and bend it, and then trim hook to required length.
