Hey Navy... I was working in the Camp Pendleton area today at Oceanside Harbor Dr. If you saw an orange CalTrans truck and some person hoeing the heck outta the weeds, that would've been me.  :)

2.3L dies
« on: July 09, 2012, 10:16:12 PM »
Im just starting to learn about the 2.3L. My question is, it fires up well and runns pretty good in the driveway but as soon as it gets up to temp and you go around the block it starts to run a little rough and will die when you come to a stop. It will start again with a little effort but wants to die again if you don't keep the RPM'S up. I'm not sure what kind of carb it is but it's a two barrel and on the side of the electric choke it does say motorcraft. I changed the fuel filter and it is never empty so it doesn't seem to be a delivery problem, so that leeds me to believe its carb related?  Any guidence would be appreciated thanks guys

Not very familiar with the Pinto 2.3 either but it sounds like your choke may be your problem.  Again, not very versed in these motors but have had similar problems to yours and was choke related.

99% of carb problems are ignition related.  (that's a joke, but usually true.)  The problem may be weak spark caused by a carbon burn path to ground, or short circuit.  Have you gone over your dist, rotor, coil, and cables?  Maybe the spark becomes so weak after warming up that you have to keep the rpm's up to stay running.  Does it backfire when you rev it up?  That's a sign of weak spark because unburned fuel collects in the exhaust and then ignites. Have you tried a C-Spark device to check the strength of the coil voltage?
